In an official meeting in Tehran, Bolivian Minister of Defense, Edmundo Novillo, and his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, have mutually confirmed a deal wherein Bolivia will purchase drones from Iran.

The visit involved discussions about cooperation regarding anti-smuggling and anti-drug trafficking efforts, academic training in nanotechnology, and holistic national development support.

The drone systems, as per the United States’ Institute for the Study of War (ISW), are frequently employed for bolstering border security and countering drug trafficking.

A report from October 2022 reveals that Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi stated 22 countries, including but not limited to Algeria, Armenia, Serbia, Tajikistan, and Venezuela, had officially requested Iranian drones.

The specific terms of the agreement, such as the types of drones, quantity, and delivery timeline, remain undisclosed.

This deal marks a continued alignment with Iran, tracing back to the presidency of Evo Morales.

Some opposition, as represented by the Comunidad Ciudadana party’s deputy, Marcelo Pedrazas, expresses concern that these agreements may not be strictly focused on fighting drug trafficking.

However, these concerns have not influenced the finalization of the deal.
