Analyzing Latin America’s Debt and Market Trends

As of early 2024, global public debt soared to $91.4 trillion, up nearly 6% from the previous year.

Globally, government debt now equals 98.1% of GDP, while in Latin America, it averages 68.7%. Bloomberg Línea provides these insights.

Argentina, with a government debt-to-GDP ratio of 117.7%, leads in Latin America. Brazil and Colombia follow with 83.8% and 61.3%, respectively.

The Institute of International Finance highlights these disparities in fiscal pressures.

Public debt in Latin America and the Caribbean decreased from 71% of GDP in 2020 to 60% in 2023.

However, due to economic challenges and high-interest rates, debt might reach 62% by 2026, as per the Inter-American Development Bank IDB.

On June 4, 2024, U.S. stock markets closed higher, influenced by a cooling labor market potentially leading to Federal Reserve rate cuts.

U.S. job openings fell to their lowest in three years, dropping from 8.36 million to 8.06 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ JOLTS report.

Meanwhile, Latin American markets had mixed results. Argentina’s Merval index fell by 4.71%, heavily impacted by declines in YPF SA and Grupo Supervielle SA stocks.

On the flip side, markets in Colombia and Mexico experienced gains, underscoring the region’s economic diversity.
