A 28-year-old American tourist died yesterday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he had been hospitalized since Tuesday after being shot in a shootout in a favela that killed another man.
Joseph Thomas, who was shot in the neck, died early yesterday morning at a private hospital in southern Rio de Janeiro, where he had been admitted since Thursday because his condition had deteriorated, Globo news portal reported.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the family on the loss of Thomas,” the U.S. consulate in Rio de Janeiro said in a statement.
The diplomatic mission offered “all appropriate assistance” for the repatriation of the body to the United States.
The tourist, a Portuguese teacher, was wounded while staying in a house in a slum in Morro do Fubá, north of the country’s tourist capital.
Another man who was on a bus was killed in the shooting, and two people were wounded.
