One of the first questions a newcomer should ask is the simplest: can I drink the tap water? Here is where tap water is safe in Latin America — and where you should reach for a filter or a bottle instead.

Where you can drink the tap water

A handful of countries run water systems you can trust straight from the tap. Chile (Santiago), Uruguay (Montevideo) and Argentina’s main cities, including Buenos Aires, all deliver genuinely drinkable tap water.

Costa Rica belongs in this group too. Its water authority tests supplies regularly and most of the country is safe, though some remote spots, coastal areas and drought-hit zones are exceptions worth asking about locally.

The in-between cases

Colombia is the notable middle ground. Bogotá and Medellín treat their water to a drinkable standard, and plenty of locals drink it without a second thought.

Even so, quality can vary by neighborhood and building, and many residents — locals and expats alike — still run it through a filter to be safe. If your stomach is sensitive in your first weeks, filtering is a cheap insurance policy.

Where to stick to bottled or filtered

Across much of the region, the safe default is not to drink from the tap. That includes Mexico (Mexico City included), Peru’s capital Lima, and most of Brazil.

Ecuador is firmly on this list as well; aging pipes and patchy treatment make even Quito and Guayaquil unsafe for the tap. As a rule, rural and small-town areas anywhere in the region call for extra caution.

Simple habits that keep you healthy

The easy fix is a good carbon or reverse-osmosis filter — a jug at home, or a filter bottle when you are out. Many newcomers also keep a refillable 20-liter garrafão delivered to the door, which is cheaper and greener than cases of small bottles.

In the not-safe countries, skip ice you cannot vouch for, rinse rather than gulp when brushing your teeth at first, and wash produce with treated water. Your body usually adjusts, but the first week is when most stomach trouble strikes.

Why it varies so much

The difference is less about wealth than about infrastructure and treatment. Older pipe networks and uneven treatment can recontaminate water even where it leaves the plant clean, which is why two big cities can sit on opposite sides of the line.

When in doubt, ask your landlord or neighbors what they actually do — it is the fastest way to read the local reality. Knowing which list you live on saves a rough first week and a lot of wasted plastic.
