MAM’s phased return to Ibirapuera Park

The Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, housed in a landmark marquee within the sprawling green oasis of Ibirapuera Park, expects to fully reopen in July 2026 after renovations that began in 2024.

For international visitors and residents alike, the park itself is a major cultural hub, often compared to New York’s Central Park, and MAM’s return restores a key piece of its artistic landscape.

An official gala party featuring a show by celebrated Brazilian singer Marina Lima is scheduled for August 18, 2026, at 7:00 pm, marking the true celebratory return for the institution.

What to see at MAM now and later

While the headquarters remains closed, visitors can see selections from MAM’s collection at the temporary exhibition “Look: MAM São Paulo visits SESC Bom Retiro.”

This show runs from July 1 to September 27, 2026, at SESC Bom Retiro on Alameda Nothmann in the historic but less-touristed Campos Elíseos neighborhood, offering a glimpse into a different side of the city.

SESC is a well-known Brazilian non-profit network of cultural and leisure centers, and this partnership keeps MAM’s important modern art collection publicly accessible during the transition.

Once the main venue reopens, the first major show will be the historic 39th Panorama of Brazilian Art, titled “After Everything Has Been Said,” opening September 12.

That exhibition will feature works by artists such as Jota Mombaça, whose installation occupies the space famously used by Louise Bourgeois’s giant spider sculpture, a beloved icon for long-time museum visitors.

MASP debuts three Latin American exhibitions

At the São Paulo Museum of Art on the bustling Avenida Paulista 1578, three new exhibitions opened in early July 2026 as part of the museum’s dedicated Latin American art programme.

MASP is famous not just for its collection but for its iconic glass-and-concrete building designed by Lina Bo Bardi, suspended above a vast open plaza that now hosts free installations.

A single ticket covers entry to all shows across both MASP buildings, with free admission all day on Tuesdays and on Friday evenings, making high culture accessible for budget-conscious travelers.

Venezuelan-born, Berlin-based artist Sol Calero has created a colourful installation filling the open ground floor, accessible for free daily without any ticket at all.

Colombian artist Carolina Caycedo presents “confluências,” a multi-media survey running until October 4, 2026, exploring themes of water, land, and community resistance.

Venezuelan kinetic artist Jesús Soto receives his first exhibition at a Brazilian museum in over 20 years, marking his experimental practice with optical and spatial illusions.

A tale of two iconic museum spaces

For expats and investors new to the city, understanding the physical settings of these two museums helps explain their global reputations.

MAM sits inside Ibirapuera Park, a massive urban retreat designed by legendary landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx and filled with buildings by Oscar Niemeyer, making a visit a two-for-one architectural and artistic experience.

MASP, in contrast, dominates the heart of São Paulo’s financial spine on Avenida Paulista, a symbol of the city’s post-war modernity where business and culture collide daily.

The renovation of MAM’s marquee, a long, low pavilion that seems to float in the park, focused on modernizing its internal systems while preserving its historic silhouette, a common challenge for mid-century landmarks.

What this means for expats and investors

A vibrant museum scene is often a leading indicator of a city’s quality of life and its ability to attract global talent, factors that directly impact the real estate and service markets that concern foreign investors.

The reopening of MAM and the dynamic programming at MASP signal a robust post-pandemic cultural recovery, reinforcing São Paulo’s status as Latin America’s premier financial and cultural capital.

For expats, these institutions offer not just leisure but crucial networking spaces, with museum galas and exhibition openings serving as key events in the city’s social calendar.

The free entry windows at MASP and the temporary free installation by Sol Calero also demonstrate a local commitment to public access, a cultural value that can make the sprawling metropolis feel more welcoming to newcomers.

Practical tips for visiting Sao Paulo museums

International visitors can save money by planning MASP visits on Tuesdays or Friday evenings when entry is free, though expect larger crowds during these popular windows.

To see MAM’s collection before the Ibirapuera building reopens, head to SESC Bom Retiro, which offers a different cultural experience in the city center and is easily reached by the Luz metro station.

The MAM gala on August 18 and the Panorama opening on September 12 are key dates for those wanting to experience the renewed space first, but booking accommodations early is wise as these events draw a sophisticated local and international crowd.

Remember that Brazilian museums are typically closed on Mondays, and a single ticket at MASP grants access to both its main building and its annex across the street, doubling the value.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will MAM São Paulo fully reopen?

MAM expects to fully reopen its Ibirapuera Park marquee in July 2026, with an official celebration on August 18 and the first exhibition opening September 12. The renovation, ongoing since 2024, has modernized the beloved pavilion while preserving its iconic architectural character.

Where can I see MAM’s art while the main building is closed?

You can visit “Look: MAM São Paulo visits SESC Bom Retiro,” running from July 1 to September 27, 2026, at SESC Bom Retiro on Alameda Nothmann, 185. This temporary venue in the Campos Elíseos neighborhood keeps the museum’s collection accessible and offers a cultural experience in a less-touristed part of the city center.

What are the new exhibitions at MASP in July 2026?

MASP is hosting installations and surveys by Sol Calero, Carolina Caycedo, and Jesús Soto, all part of the museum’s Latin American art programme. Calero’s ground-floor installation is free daily, Caycedo’s multi-media show runs until October 4, and Soto’s survey marks his first Brazilian museum show in over two decades.
