The Ibovespa fell 0.91% on Monday to 172,197 points — a fifth consecutive daily loss, the lowest close since January 21. New Gulf of Persia attacks re-escalated US-Iran tensions and drove the session lower.
The World Cup build-up continues: Brazil x Egypt in Cleveland on Saturday June 6, the last warmup. Group C opens June 14 — Brazil vs Morocco, New Jersey, 19h BRT.
This is part of The Rio Times’ daily São Paulo/Rio de Janeiro daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.

03What to See & DoCULTURE
MASP free Tuesday — Damián Ortega and the glass easels on the week’s best morning
Tuesday is MASP’s weekly free day — 10h–18h, no ticket, no booking, walk straight in from Trianon-MASP on Linha Verde at Av. Paulista 1578. At 19°C and 20% rain it is also the most comfortable Paulista morning of the week so far, making the combination of the free museum and the easily walkable, car-accessible avenue unusually strong for a mid-week day.
The current headline is the Damián Ortega survey — the Mexican artist’s retrospective examining objects, labour and entropy through sculpture and installation across the building’s upper floors, one of the strongest international shows on the São Paulo calendar this season. Alongside it runs Acervo em transformação, the permanent collection displayed on Lina Bo Bardi’s famous glass easels in the main hall, the 1968 museological experiment that remains the most distinctive feature of the MASP interior and has shaped a generation of São Paulo curatorial thinking.
The MASP building straddling Av. Paulista on its pilotis — the free belvedere underneath, the brutalist concrete above — is worth twenty minutes even without entering, and Tuesday mornings before 11h are among the quietest of the week: the glass-easel hall calm, the Ortega rooms unhurried, and the café below already serving from 10h for a post-gallery coffee or lunch. MASP · free Tuesdays (R$60 / R$30 meia other days) · Tue 10h–18h · Av. Paulista 1578, Bela Vista.
Luiz Braga and kigumi — two free Paulista shows to pair with the MASP free day
If MASP is the anchor, the IMS Paulista at Av. Paulista 2424 and Japan House SP at Av. Paulista 52 are the natural same-corridor companions — both free, both open Tuesdays, both a short walk from Trianon-MASP. The IMS Paulista runs Luiz Braga’s Arquipélago Imaginário photography show through August 31, open 10h–20h Tuesdays — one of the most undervisited free exhibitions on the avenue.
Japan House SP runs the kigumi nail-free joinery show through August 2, Tue–Fri 10h–18h, free — a compact exhibition in a Kengo Kuma–designed venue that matches the show’s own attention to craft. The zero-cost Tuesday route: MASP 10h–12h30 → IMS Paulista 13h → Japan House 15h → Itaú Cultural (Av. Paulista 149, free, 11h–20h) 16h30. IMS Paulista · free · Tue–Sun 10h–20h · Av. Paulista 2424.
Bar Brahma samba, Casa de Francisca, Blue Note SP — the Tuesday music circuit
Bar Brahma at Av. São João 677, República, runs the Tuesday samba from 20h, R$25 — the 1948 heritage room at mid-week, its Monday and Tuesday programmes the most serious in its weekly schedule. Arrive by 20h for a seat; the corner tables are taken by 20h30.
Casa de Francisca at R. José Maria Lisboa 190, Jardim Paulista, runs the Tuesday jazz and MPB programme from 20h, R$50–70. It is consistently the best small-format Tuesday room in the city — the 100-seat space draws working musicians and a knowledgeable mid-week crowd.
Ó do Borogodó at R. Horácio Lane 21, Vila Madalena, runs the Tuesday roda from 21h (R$30–40), with the bairro boteco circuit on R. Aspicuelta warming from 19h30; Blue Note SP on Av. Paulista carries the Tuesday headline from 20h on the rooftop (R$80–100), and SESC Pompeia at R. Clélia 93 runs the full Tuesday evening programme in the Lina Bo Bardi sheds — pool, theatre and bar all open.
Itaú Cultural Mestre Didi through Jul 5, Tue–Sat 11h–20h, free, Av. Paulista 149 · IMS Paulista Luiz Braga through Aug 31, Tue–Sun 10h–20h, free, Av. Paulista 2424 · Japan House SP kigumi through Aug 2, Tue–Fri 10h–18h, free, Av. Paulista 52 · MAC USP Tue–Sun, free, Ibirapuera · Casa das Rosas Tue–Sun, free, Av. Paulista 37 · SESC Pompeia daily, R. Clélia 93 · Mercado Municipal Mon–Sat 6h–18h, R. da Cantareira 306. Closed today: Pinacoteca complex (all three buildings — reopens Wednesday). Parque Ibirapuera open daily, free, 5h–midnight.

09Business & MarketsFINANCE
The Ibovespa fell 0.91% on Monday to close at 172,197.46 points — a fifth consecutive daily loss and the lowest close since January 21. The year-to-date gain has compressed to 6.87%.

B3 runs a full Tuesday session. The Selic holds at 14.75%; the Copom on June 17–18 is the month’s key rate event and Finance Minister Durigan’s Monday interview is the immediate fiscal signal to watch.

11Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQ
Is MASP free on Tuesdays?
Yes — MASP at Av. Paulista 1578 is free every Tuesday, 10h–18h, with no ticket or reservation required. The current shows are the Damián Ortega survey and Acervo em transformação, the permanent collection displayed on Lina Bo Bardi’s glass easels — the 1968 museological experiment that defines the interior.
On all other days the full ticket is R$60 / R$30 meia; Tuesday is the single highest-value free museum slot on the São Paulo weekly calendar. The MASP free Tuesday has run continuously since the museum’s founding practice and is the primary reason to schedule a Paulista visit mid-week.
Is the Pinacoteca open today?
No — the Pinacoteca complex (Pina Luz, Pina Estação and Pina Contemporânea) closes every Tuesday without exception, its only weekly closure day. The complex runs Wednesday through Monday, 10h–18h, with Pina Luz extending to 20h on Thursdays and free entry there between 18h and 20h.
The Pinacoteca reopens tomorrow Wednesday June 3 with Tayou’s Nocaute across Pina Luz, Caboco’s Macunaíma é Duwid at Pina Estação and Para Crianças at Pina Contemporânea — tickets R$15 / R$7.50 meia, or free entry every Saturday across all three buildings.
Why did the Ibovespa fall on Monday June 1?
The Ibovespa fell 0.91% to 172,197.46 points on Monday June 1 — its fifth consecutive daily loss, the lowest close since January 21, and the compression of the year-to-date gain to 6.87%. Three consecutive monthly losses have now accumulated since the April peak of 199,000 points.
The driver was fresh US-Iran escalation in the Gulf of Persia, with new attacks keeping oil elevated and emerging-market risk appetite suppressed. PETR4 rose on the oil move while VALE3 and most major banks fell; since the Iran conflict began, the index has shed over 16,000 points.
When does Brazil play next and what is the World Cup schedule?
Brazil’s final pre-tournament warmup is against Egypt on Saturday June 6 in Cleveland — Neymar is expected to miss this match too, still carrying his grade 2 calf injury from the Panama game. The World Cup tournament itself opens June 11 in Los Angeles.
Brazil’s full Group C schedule: Morocco on June 14 in New Jersey (19h BRT), Haiti on June 18 in Philadelphia (21h30 BRT), and Scotland on June 22 at a venue to be confirmed. A positive group-stage run would set up a round-of-16 tie in late June before the quarterfinals in early July.
