Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief for Tuesday, June 2, 2026
Tuesday opens at 22°C in Rio de Janeiro with 55% rain — the heaviest day of the week and a genuine indoor day. The full Centro museum map is back: MAR, MAM Rio, Museu do Amanhã and the Praça Mauá waterfront corridor all reopen after the Monday closure. CCBB Rio is the one exception — it closes Tuesdays only and reopens Wednesday. The Ibovespa fell a further 0.91% on Monday to 172,197 points, a fifth consecutive daily loss and the index’s lowest close since January 21 — driven by new Gulf of Persia attacks re-escalating US-Iran tensions. The World Cup calendar builds: Brazil x Egypt in Cleveland on Saturday June 6, then Group C opens June 14 with Morocco in New Jersey.
This is part of The Rio Times’ daily São Paulo/Rio de Janeiro daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.

03What to See & DoCULTURE
MAR reopens — No Martins’ Sortilégios de desvio and the Praça Mauá waterfront circuit
Tuesday is the day the Praça Mauá museum circuit comes back to life after its Monday pause — and on a 55% rain day, the sheltered walk from the VLT Praça Mauá stop to the museum entrance is exactly what the brief recommends. The Museu de Arte do Rio at Praça Mauá 5 runs Tuesday–Sunday 10h–17h, R$20 (free Saturdays), with the No Martins solo Sortilégios de desvio through September 20 as the current headline.
No Martins is a São Paulo painter making his first institutional solo in a Rio museum context — seven months of work that has built a serious critical reputation since opening. The MAR terrace, closed to the rain today, has the best open view of Guanabara Bay on a clear day; the interior rooms are strong enough to carry the visit entirely on a wet Tuesday.
The MAR building itself rewards exploration — the 2013 restoration stacked two heritage buildings and linked them with a spiral ramp connecting galleries across levels, and the ground-floor café doubles as rain shelter. The standard Tuesday loop: VLT to Praça Mauá → MAR 10h–12h30 → Museu do Amanhã (Praça Mauá 1, R$30, 9h–18h) → Real Gabinete Português de Leitura (R. Luís de Camões 30, free, Mon–Fri 9h–17h) → CCBB Rio on Wednesday when it reopens. MAR · R$20, free Saturdays · Tue–Sun 10h–17h · Praça Mauá 5.
Oiticica and Valentim at MAM Rio — the Flamengo waterfront for a rainy afternoon
If the morning belongs to MAR and the Praça Mauá port circuit, MAM Rio at Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85 is the afternoon counterweight — a purpose-built modernist pavilion on the Flamengo waterfront that reads well on a rainy day. The double bill of Hélio Oiticica (Parangolés and Bólides) and the Rubem Valentim retrospective runs through July, R$14 (free Sundays), Tue–Sun 11h–19h.
Oiticica’s Parangolés are among the most important works in twentieth-century Brazilian art — participatory textile pieces designed to be worn and moved in — and the Valentim retrospective alongside them puts two very different Brazilian modernists in productive dialogue. Route from MAR: VLT Cinelândia → Metrô Linha 1 to Flamengo → ten minutes through Parque do Flamengo to the pavilion at Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85. MAM Rio · R$14, free Sundays · Tue–Sun 11h–19h, closed Mondays.
Pedra do Sal Tuesday roda, Carioca da Gema and the Lapa circuit
Tuesday night is a genuine live-music night in Rio. Pedra do Sal at Largo João da Baiana, Saúde, runs the free Tuesday roda from 20h — one of its three weekly nights (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday) — on the historic quilombo square that is one of the most distinctive outdoor music venues in the city. The 55% rain forecast is the complication: the roda moves to nearby bars when rain is heavy, so check conditions before walking the ten minutes from the Praça Mauá VLT stop.
Carioca da Gema at R. Mem de Sá 79, Lapa, runs the Tuesday roda from 20h, R$45–55 — the sheltered samba reference that is the right call when outdoor Pedra do Sal is at risk. Rio Scenarium at R. do Lavradio 20 runs the Tuesday programme across all three floors from 19h30, R$50–60.
Blue Note Rio at Av. Borges de Medeiros 1424, Lagoa, runs the Tuesday programme, R$80–100. TribOz at R. Conde de Lages 19, Santa Teresa, runs the Tuesday jazz set from 20h, R$50.
Museu do Amanhã Tue–Sun 9h–18h, R$30, Praça Mauá 1 · MNBA Tue–Sun 10h–18h, free, Av. Rio Branco 199 · Paço Imperial Constelações 40 anos, Tue–Sun, free, Praça XV 48 · Casa França-Brasil Tue–Sun, free, R. Visconde de Itaboraí 78 · Real Gabinete Português de Leitura Mon–Fri 9h–17h, free, R. Luís de Camões 30 · Theatro Municipal RJ guided visits Tue–Fri, R$20, Praça Floriano. Closed today: CCBB Rio (Tuesday only — reopens Wednesday 9h, free, Amano show).
04Getting AroundTRANSPORT
Rodízio is not in force in the city of Rio de Janeiro. MetrôRio runs Linhas 1, 2 and 4 on the standard Tuesday timetable, 5h–midnight.
With 55% rain, allow significant extra time on surface routes during the 17h–20h peak and watch for Centro street flooding alerts near the port. The VLT Carioca is the recommended Centro circuit route — it is sheltered at the Praça Mauá and Cinelândia stops and avoids the surface flooding that heavy Centro rain can trigger. Praça XV ferry to Niterói on the standard commuter timetable from 5h30.
05Where to EatFOOD
Post-MAR lunch: Confeitaria Colombo at R. Gonçalves Dias 32, R$78, the 1894 belle-époque room, five minutes from MAR and a reliable wet-day Centro stop. Bar Urca at R. Cândido Gaffrée 205 for the seawall pé-sujo — the covered tables hold well in light rain.
Tuesday dinner: Lasai (Rafa Costa e Silva, R$420) is open Tuesdays — booking essential, R. Relator Laurindo 7, Botafogo. Oro (Felipe Bronze, R$480) runs the full Tuesday service; Nova Capela at Av. Mem de Sá 96, Lapa, open until 4h, is the post-Carioca da Gema classic late stop.
06Practical InfoESSENTIALS
Bank branches open 10h–16h on the standard Tuesday timetable. Shopping centres (BarraShopping, Rio Sul, Village Mall) open 10h–22h.
The IRPF filing deadline passed Saturday May 30 — late filers should submit via gov.br to minimise the automatic penalty. Pharmacies on plantão.
07Community & LifestyleEXPAT LIFE
Tuesday at 22°C and 55% rain: the Praça Mauá museums are the practical morning call, and the Metrô the right vehicle for all cross-city movement today. The Aliança Francesa at R. Muniz Barreto 730, Botafogo, runs the Tuesday programme with language classes and screenings.
The RJ Athletic Club Tuesday sessions and the American Society of Rio de Janeiro Tuesday programme run on standard timetable. For those following the World Cup: Brazil fly to Cleveland for the Egypt warmup on Saturday June 6.
08Game DaySPORT
Brazil x Egypt Saturday June 6 — last warmup before Morocco on June 14
No fixtures today. Brazil are travelling to the USA following Sunday’s 6–2 win over Panama at the Maracanã — Vini Jr, Casemiro, Rayan, Paquetá, Igor Thiago and Danilo Santos the scorers in front of 72,000.
The last warmup before the tournament is against Egypt on Saturday June 6 in Cleveland — Neymar is expected to miss this one too with his grade 2 calf injury. The Group C opener follows on June 14: Brazil vs Morocco in New Jersey at 19h BRT, then Haiti June 18 (Philadelphia, 21h30 BRT) and Scotland June 22.
09Business & MarketsFINANCE
The Ibovespa fell 0.91% on Monday to close at 172,197.46 points — a fifth consecutive daily loss and the index’s lowest close since January 21. The year-to-date gain has now compressed to 6.87%.
The driver was a fresh escalation of US-Iran tensions in the Gulf of Persia — new attacks pushed oil higher, PETR4 rose while VALE3 and the major banks fell. The dollar traded as low as R$5.01 intraday before recovering; since the Iran conflict began, the Ibovespa has lost over 16,000 points.
B3 runs a full Tuesday session. The Selic holds at 14.75% and the June 17–18 Copom is the month’s key rate event; Finance Minister Durigan’s Monday interview may signal the government’s fiscal framing heading into that meeting.

11Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQ
Is CCBB Rio open on Tuesdays?
No — CCBB Rio at R. Primeiro de Março 66 in Centro is the one major institution that closes on Tuesdays, not Mondays. It runs Wednesday through Monday, 9h–20h, free every single day, and reopens tomorrow Wednesday at 9h.
The current headline show is Yoshitaka Amano’s retrospective Além da Fantasia — covering Deva Loka, Tatsunoko, Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D — running through July 7. All other major Centro institutions (MAR, MAM Rio, MNBA, Museu do Amanhã) are open on Tuesday and closed on Monday.
Which Rio museums are open on Tuesdays?
The full Centro corridor reopens on Tuesdays after the Monday pause: MAR (Praça Mauá 5, 10h–17h, R$20), MAM Rio (Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, 11h–19h, R$14), Museu do Amanhã (Praça Mauá 1, 9h–18h, R$30), Paço Imperial (Praça XV, free) and MNBA (Av. Rio Branco 199) are all open.
The one exception today is CCBB Rio, which closes Tuesdays only (open Wed–Mon 9h–20h, free). The Jardim Botânico and Pão de Açúcar cable car operate every day, but the 55% rain today makes the indoor Centro circuit the far better plan.
Why did the Ibovespa fall on Monday June 1?
The Ibovespa fell 0.91% to 172,197.46 points on Monday June 1 — its fifth consecutive daily loss and the index’s lowest close since January 21. The year-to-date gain compressed to 6.87%.
The driver was a fresh round of US-Iran tensions in the Gulf of Persia, with new attacks keeping oil elevated and emerging-market risk appetite suppressed. PETR4 rose on the oil move while VALE3 and most major banks fell. Since the Iran conflict began, the Ibovespa has shed over 16,000 points from its April peak.
When does Brazil play next and what is the World Cup schedule?
Brazil’s final warmup before the tournament is against Egypt on Saturday June 6 in Cleveland, USA — Neymar is expected to miss this one too with his grade 2 calf injury. The World Cup opens on June 11 in Los Angeles.
Brazil’s full Group C schedule: Morocco on June 14 in New Jersey (19h BRT), Haiti on June 18 in Philadelphia (21h30 BRT), and Scotland on June 22 at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue. A win in the group stage would set up a round-of-16 tie in late June.
