She began playing piano at eight. She studied classical music, then jazz, then gospel, then everything at once. She became the Minister of Music at St. Paul AME Church in Atlanta. She performed in Tyler Perry’s productions and in Dreamgirls. She played the 2008 Democratic National Convention and Obama’s inauguration in 2009. Her single “Call My Name” from “The Sunroom” reached number one on the Billboard chart and won ASCAP’s Rhythm and Soul Song of the Year. Aretha Franklin invited her to perform. She opened for B.B. King in the UK. Her sound combines neo-soul, gospel, R&B and jazz — all driven by her own piano and a voice that reviewers have compared to Minnie Riperton’s in its range and warmth. Wednesday at the Gema carries the same Happy Hour deal as Tuesday — free entry from 6:30 pm, dose dupla caipirinha de limão, Original at R$12.99, half-price petiscos — but on a night when the Scenarium is also running, the dynamic shifts. The Gema becomes the first stop in the Lapa crawl: HH at 6:30, main show at 8:30, then walk five minutes to the Scenarium by 10 pm when the three-storey building is peaking. Wednesday is the first night of the week when all three Lapa anchors — Scenarium, Gema, Beco — are operating simultaneously. The triangle is complete.

The Beco on a Wednesday fills the same role it fills every night — the free, no-cover samba anchor at Joaquim Silva — but on the first night when all three Lapa venues are running, the Beco becomes the connective tissue. The natural Wednesday crawl: Gema HH at 6:30, Gema show at 8:30, Beco at 10 for the acoustic samba interlude, Scenarium at 11 for the three-floor peak, back to the Beco at midnight for the final set. The Beco is one minute from the Gema and five from the Scenarium — the physical centre of the Lapa triangle.

On a Wednesday when the full Lapa triangle is running, Nova Capela operates as the dinner hub — the place to eat between the Gema HH and the Scenarium peak, or to close the night after midnight when the Beco and Scenarium wind down.
