Rio Mayoralty Poll: Paes Ahead with 30 Percent; Three Others Tied for Second

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The dispute for Rio de Janeiro City Hall has ex-Mayor Eduardo Paes (DEM) leading with 30 percent of voting intentions, and a technical tie for second place, according to the Datafolha poll released on Thursday, October 8th.

It was the first poll conducted by the institute in this election after the confirmation of candidacies and the first before the beginning of free election propaganda time on radio and TV, which starts this Friday, October 9th.

According to the poll, behind Paes are current Mayor Marcelo Crivella (Republicanos), with 14 percent, state deputy Martha Rocha (PDT), with ten percent, and ex-governor Benedita da Silva (PT), with eight percent – all three are tied within the error margin, which is three percentage points plus or minus.

Next come Renata Souza (PSOL) and Bandeira de Mello (Rede), both with three percent, and Cyro Garcia (PSTU), with two percent – they are also tied with Benedita within the error margin.

With one percent of voting intentions are Clarissa Garotinho (Pros), Fred Luz (Novo), Luiz Lima (PSL) and Paulo Messina (MDB). Candidates Henrique Simonard (PCO), Glória Heloíza (PSC) and Suêd Haidar (PMB) have not reached one percentage point.

Among poll respondents, 22 percent said they intended to vote blank or void and three percent said they have not decided. The poll was conducted in-person with 900 voters between October 5th and 6th.

Rejections

According to the poll, Crivella is by far the most rejected candidate, at a rate of 58 percent, followed by Paes (30 percent), Clarissa Garotinho (29 percent) and Benedita (20 percent). The other candidates scored a rejection rate of 14 percentage points or less.
