Petrobras Secures Strategic Oil Supply Deal with Indian State Refiner BPCL

Petrobras, Brazil’s state-controlled oil giant, has signed a key agreement with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), India’s second-largest state-owned refiner, to supply up to 6 million barrels of crude oil annually starting in 2025.

The deal, finalized during the India Energy Week in New Delhi on February 12, 2025, underscores growing energy cooperation between two major players in the global oil market.

This framework agreement allows both companies to periodically renegotiate terms based on market conditions, providing flexibility and adaptability. Petrobras’ Director of Logistics, Commercialization, and Markets, Claudio Schlosser, highlighted the deal’s significance.

He emphasized its role in expanding Petrobras’ footprint in India. In 2024, India accounted for 4% of Petrobras’ crude exports. As the world’s third-largest oil importer, India relies on imports for 85% of its oil needs.

This makes stable supply agreements like this essential for its energy security. BPCL Chairman G. Krishnakumar emphasized that diversifying crude sources is central to India’s strategy to reduce dependence on traditional suppliers.

BPCL and Petrobras Strengthen Energy Ties

BPCL processes crude from over 21 countries and operates three major refineries with a combined capacity of 706,000 barrels per day. This agreement aligns with its goal of securing competitive and reliable oil supplies amid global energy uncertainties.

For Petrobras, the deal strengthens its position in Asia and supports its long-term strategy to diversify export markets. The company aims to deepen ties with key importers like India while ensuring steady revenue streams as global demand shifts.

This partnership also reflects broader bilateral efforts between Brazil and India to enhance energy collaboration. Beyond this deal, Petrobras is exploring new ventures in Africa and has signed agreements with other Indian firms for exploration projects.

The agreement highlights the mutual benefits of strategic partnerships in addressing global energy challenges while securing stable supply chains for both nations.
