Peru invests US$27.5 million in the purchase of 10,000 7.62×51 mm assault rifles
The Ministry of Defense has allocated a budget of US$27.52 million for the acquisition of a lot of 10,000 7.62×51 mm caliber assault rifles for the benefit of the III Division of the Peruvian Army.
The Minutes of the Administration Committee of the Fund for the Armed Forces and National Police, dated January 25, 2023, approved the financial allocation in favor of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces to meet the requirement related to the Public Investment Project (PIP).
The project is “Acquisition of 7.62×51 mm caliber assault rifles for the III Army Division, Cerro Colorado district, province, and department of Arequipa – 10,000 rifles” with Unique Investment Code N° 2520842.
In line with the financial allocation, the Peruvian Army requested through Oficio N° 633/OPRE/Y/c the incorporation of S/103,740,712 to its budget to purchase 10,000 assault rifles.
The request was evaluated in different units of the Ministry of Defense, passing all filters, including those of the General Directorate of Planning and Budget and the General Office of Legal Counsel.
THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN FAME AND IWI
According to Infodefensa, FAME S.A.C. and Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) joined forces in 2022 to start an assembly and co-production project of small caliber weapons in Peru, initially aiming at supplying 7.62×51 mm assault rifles to the Peruvian Armed Forces and National Police, with IWI’s Galil ACE rifles as the first line.
