Peru backs Ecuador’s “democratic process” after closing of Parliament

On Wednesday, the Government of Peru expressed its support for the “democratic process” in Ecuador shortly after the President of that country, Guillermo Lasso, decreed the closure of the Parliament and called for early general elections.

“The Government of Peru reiterates its support to the democratic process in the sister Republic of Ecuador and hopes that the general elections (…) allow the Ecuadorian people to ensure the maintenance of political governance and peace,” the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The text also considered that Lasso’s decision to apply a mechanism known as “cross death” was carried out “in the exercise of his constitutional faculties”.

Likewise, the office of the Peruvian Presidency expressed on its official Twitter social network account that the administration of President Dina Boluarte respects the decision of her Ecuadorian counterpart.

“We advocate for the upcoming electoral process in the sister Republic of Ecuador to be carried out within the legal channels, in peace and democracy,” the publication added.

This Wednesday, Lasso announced his decision to apply the “cross death”, a legal figure that allows the head of state to move forward with the dissolution of the National Assembly, call a general election, and govern for the next six months through decree laws that must have the prior review of the Constitutional Court.

Amid an impeachment trial that Congress had initiated against him hours before, the Ecuadorian President decided to apply Article 148 of the Ecuadorian Constitution “due to the serious political crisis and internal commotion” that he considered his country was going through.

Likewise, he requested the National Electoral Council to immediately call for legislative and presidential elections to complete the terms of both Powers, which end in 2025.
