New York Sentences Former Honduran President to 45 Years for Drug Trafficking

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, 55, received a 45-year prison sentence in New York for drug trafficking.

The court also imposed an eight million dollar fine on him. Hernández facilitated over 400 tons of cocaine shipments to the U.S. during a decade-long conspiracy with drug traffickers.

The Manhattan federal court found him guilty after a two-week trial in March. Judge Kevin Castel demanded a payment plan for the fine within two weeks.

Despite claiming innocence, the evidence presented depicted Hernández as deeply involved in protecting traffickers in exchange for significant payments.

His presidency, from 2014 to 2022, contrasted his public anti-drug stance with private actions supporting massive cocaine operations in the U.S.

His fall from grace escalated when U.S. prosecutors in 2019 claimed he took one million dollars from drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

In addition, his brother Juan Antonio, is already serving a life sentence in New York for similar crimes.

Hernández’s Downfall

The trial revealed Hernández’s dual role: publicly fighting drugs while secretly ensuring smooth operations for traffickers using national resources.

Judge Castel described him as “a man of two faces,” emphasizing his skillful facade. As the sentence was pronounced, Hernández, standing with his lawyer, accepted the outcome.

He limped out of the courtroom, facing a future where he’d be 100 years old at his release if he served the full sentence.

Arrested three months after his presidency ended and extradited from Tegucigalpa in April 2022, Hernández had risen from a rural congressman to the presidency.

During his tenure, he asserted that drug money had infiltrated nearly all Honduran political parties. He now views himself as a victim of political and narcotic conspiracies.

The case underlines the deep-rooted corruption of drugs in Central American politics and stresses the need for accountability in the fight against drug trafficking.
