Brazil: Homicides drop 30% in November in the state of Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the state of Rio de Janeiro, murders fell 30% in November compared to the same month in 2020. In the year to date, the reduction was 8%.

From January to November this year, there were 3,008 victims, and last month, 228. These were the lowest numbers for November and 11 months since the beginning of the historical series of the Institute of Public Safety (ISP) in 1991. The data were released today (21).

The state also recorded a 28% drop in November in intentional violent crimes, including murder, bodily injury, death, and robbery. In the year-to-date, the retraction was 7%.

The indicator had the lowest value for the month and the period since 1999. There were 3,149 victims from January to November 2021 and 242 in November.

Vehicle thefts fell 22% in November this year compared to the same period in 2020. The drop was 7% year-to-date. According to ISP, this was the lowest for the month and the period since 2012.

Already the street robberies fell 19% in November and 7% in the 11 months. The indicator also reached the lowest levels since 2012. Cargo thefts fell 9% year-to-date, going the lowest value since 2013.

According to the director-president of the ISP, Marcela Ortiz, the year 2021 has been confirming the trend in the state of Rio to reduce the occurrence of crimes against life.

“Since 2018, the state of Rio has been registering consecutive drops in felony homicides, and we have almost always beaten the lowest value in our historical series. We believe that this is no coincidence but rather the result of continuous work in public safety. We also have a positive highlight in the crimes against property, which have been falling even when compared to last year, when social isolation helped to reduce the values of street robberies and vehicle thefts,” said Marcela in a statement.
