Covid-19: Brazil Counts 149,000 Deaths, 5.05 Million Cumulative Cases (October 9th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has reached 149,639 deaths from the novel coronavirus pandemic. In the past 24 hours, 682 deaths by Covid-19 were recorded.  Another 2,310 deaths are under investigation.

The number of people that have been infected since the start of the pandemic totaled 5,055,888. Between Wednesday and Thursday, the Ministry of Health was notified of 27,444 positive Covid-19 diagnoses.

The data are part of the Ministry of Health’s daily update, released on Friday evening, October 9th. The data are organized based on information sent by state Health Secretariats from all over Brazil.

There are still 472,654 patients in follow-up. According to the Ministry, 4,433,595 people have recovered from the disease.

The progress of the pandemic this week showed stabilization of the case curve (-0.5) and a slight reduction of the death curve (-6 percent).

Covid-19 in the states

The states with the highest number of deaths are São Paulo (37,068), Rio de Janeiro (19,222), Ceará (9,126), Pernambuco (8,397), and Minas Gerais (7,992).

The states with fewest cases are Roraima (670), Acre (674), Amapá (725), Tocantins (1,002), and Mato Grosso do Sul (1,409).

International comparison

According to the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Bulletin released on Wednesday, Brazil ranks 3rd in number of cases, behind India (6.4 million) and the United States (7.3 million), countries that are much more populous. In the ranking of deaths by Covid-19, Brazil ranks 2nd, behind the United States (208,700).

In the list of incidence by country (cases per one million inhabitants), Brazil ranks 8th, with 23,300. In terms of mortality (deaths per one million inhabitants), the country ranked 3rd (694.7), behind Belgium (867) and Peru (989).
