The discovery of a bronze Nazi eagle from the wreck of the German battleship Graf Spee has become a long-standing issue for the Uruguayan government.

Found by diver Héctor Bado seventeen years ago, the emblematic piece has remained in a warehouse after a legal dispute.

Recently, President Luis Lacalle Pou proposed melting down the eagle to create a sculpture of a dove, a symbol of peace.

However, historians, academics, and even political allies met this plan with strong opposition.

Businessman Alfredo Etchegaray, who financed the piece’s rescue, called the proposal absurd and argued for its preservation in a museum.

Following the public outcry, President Lacalle Pou retracted his plan, acknowledging the majority’s disagreement.

This has left the government without a clear solution for the controversial object.

Etchegaray suggests that the eagle belongs in a museum as a historical artifact, representing the dark era of Nazism.

He demands the government honor their initial agreement, which entitles him to financial compensation based on the value of the piece.

The government, however, claims the contract was not fully fulfilled.

The eagle’s value is difficult to determine, given its historical significance. Etchegaray estimates it to be around $60 million.

The legal battle surrounding the eagle began nine years ago, with a court order to auction it and allocate part of the proceeds to the financiers.

Yet, the government appealed the decision, and the Supreme Court ruled the piece to be under state custody.

With no resolution in sight, Lacalle Pou’s misguided proposal only added to the controversy.

The Uruguayan government now faces the challenge of finding a suitable resolution for the eagle’s fate, which has become a highly debated and sensitive issue.
