China Controls Quarter of Trade at Latin America’s Busiest Port in Santos Brazil

The Brazilian Ministry of Ports and Aeropuertos announced that China represented 25.7% of all trade transactions at the Port of Santos last month.

The largest port in Latin America set a new container handling record in February 2025, moving 434,700 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). This volume marked an 8% increase compared to February 2024.

The port continues its impressive growth trajectory following unprecedented 2024 performance. Santos processed 179.8 million tonnes of cargo last year, a 3.8% increase over 2023 figures.

The facility handled 5.4 million TEUs throughout 2024, breaking the 5 million TEU barrier for the first time. Pulp exports led the surge in February, reaching 742,100 tonnes and growing 14.4% year-over-year.

Alcohol exports climbed to 38,100 tonnes, representing a dramatic 47.5% increase. Coffee shipments rose 19.7% to 200,900 tonnes, while soy flour exports grew 6.8% to 636,300 tonnes.

Santos solidified its position as Brazil’s trade gateway, handling 28.7% of the country’s foreign commerce. The complex facilitated approximately $174.43 billion in international trade during 2024.

Brazil’s Strategic Port Expansion Strengthens Ties with China

China has maintained its position as Brazil’s principal trading partner since 2009. This relationship reflects China’s broader global maritime strategy. Chinese companies now operate or own stakes in 91 port projects worldwide.

Brazilian authorities have approved significant expansion plans to accommodate growing demand. The new STS10 container terminal will feature four berths instead of the initially proposed three. This $580 million project will boost the port’s capacity from 6 million to 9 million containers annually.

The expansion comes as global maritime trade patterns shift dramatically. China dominates global port operations, with its Maritime Silk Road reaching 117 ports across 43 countries. The United States and European Union face challenges from China’s growing maritime influence.

During peak harvest seasons, daily truck traffic at Santos jumps from 3,000 to 15,000 vehicles. The port operates around the clock, creating significant economic activity throughout the region. Santos connects with over 600 ports in 125 countries, cementing its role as Latin America’s premier maritime hub.
