Brazil’s São Paulo condominiums required to report domestic violence
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – São Paulo Legislative Assembly’s deputies passed a bill requiring residential and commercial condominiums in the state to report domestic violence incidents to security bodies. The measure still needs to be sanctioned by São Paulo governor João Doria to become effective.
Bill 108/2020 was authored by deputy Professor Kenny and determines that condominium managers or persons in charge must immediately or within 24 hours report incidents of domestic violence, whether against children, teenagers, the elderly or women.
The bill also calls for information to be provided that may contribute to the aggressor’s identification.
Should the law be disregarded, the condominium may receive a warning on the first violation notice, or fines of up to R$2,900 (US$552) as of the second violation notice. The amount of the fine may be reverted to funds and programs to protect the rights of women, children, or the elderly.
