Brazil Takes G20 Helm, Aims for Climate Action and Social Equality
Brazil’s President, Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, became the G20 leader at a recent New Delhi summit.
He took over from India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
Three main goals mark Brazil’s G20 term: fighting hunger, climate action, and promoting social fairness. Lula announced two new task forces for these issues.
The slogan for Brazil’s term is “Building a Fair World and a Sustainable Planet.”
Lula mentioned a recent Rio Grande do Sul cyclone that claimed 41 lives. He stressed that this tragedy shows the need for fast climate action.

The G20 includes 19 major economies and the European Union. The African Union also joined as a permanent member during the New Delhi summit.
Lula said emerging countries should have a stronger role in groups like the World Bank and IMF.
He emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in tackling global challenges.
Brazil’s term starts on December 1, 2023, and ends on November 30, 2024. The country will host over 100 meetings and a prominent summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Lula pointed out that effective policies need proper funding. He said the government aims to hear from the public through open dialogues.
This is the first time Brazil has led the G20 since its start in 1999. At first, the group only had finance ministers and central bank heads.
It changed in 2008 to also include leaders of nations.
Lula highlighted that the global system needs an update. He added that reducing inequality can only solve many of today’s global problems.
India’s term focused on sustainable living, growth, and global teamwork. Lula said Brazil will continue this work.
