Brazilian retailer Magalu began selling its own stock on the Shopee marketplace, run by a rival, on Thursday 15 October. The platform says about 90 million people in Brazil visit it each month.

For US readers, Amazon and the Nasdaq-listed Mercado Libre already carry Magalu’s goods, which makes Shopee its third big platform deal of 2026. Magalu is short for Magazine Luiza, a Brazilian retailer of appliances, electronics and furniture listed on the B3 stock exchange in São Paulo.

What Magalu Announced

Magalu, listed on the B3 as MGLU3, put products from its own warehouses on the Shopee marketplace on Thursday. According to Exame, the range covers home appliances, consumer electronics, furniture, games and computer goods.

The products come from Magalu and its KaBuM! brand and appear in Shopee’s official-stores section, called Lojas Oficiais, Poder360 reported. Magalu keeps the inventory and delivers through Magalog, its own logistics arm.

The agreement carries reciprocity and non-exclusivity clauses, Poder360 said, so Magalu stays free to sell elsewhere. Magalu will also use Shopee’s tools, such as live streams, short videos and a network of creators and affiliates.

A Third Big Marketplace Deal in 2026

The Shopee marketplace follows Amazon and Mercado Libre, which also carry Magalu’s own stock. Exame said Magalu announced the Amazon deal in June and the Mercado Libre deal in September.

Propmark said the Mercado Libre deal began on 2 September and covers about 27,000 items, as an earlier Rio Times report showed. Exame added that Magalu expects Shopee to be its last such partnership of 2026.

Magalu had already partnered with AliExpress in 2024, Exame noted. Its commercial and operations vice president told Poder360 the aim is to expand sales quickly and profitably on partner marketplaces.

Why Magalu Sells on a Rival’s Shelf

Magalu expects more than 75% of its buyers on the Shopee marketplace to be new customers, Exame reported. Exame said the same proportion has been seen in the Amazon and Mercado Libre deals.

Exame said winning customers through paid online advertising has become more expensive, one reason for the marketplace push. Magalu plans to focus its own platform on home and technology goods, where it leads, instead of acting as a general marketplace.

More than 30% of the revenue of Magalog already comes from outside clients, Exame said. Magalu sees a chance to win sales from rival Casas Bahia’s store closures, though its executive said it never celebrates a competitor’s court-supervised restructuring.

Magalu expects online sales to grow again in the fourth quarter, with Black Friday as the strongest date of the year, according to Exame. It is also redesigning its app, which has more than 50 million monthly active users, with changes due by the end of 2026.

How Magalu Shares Reacted

Magalu shares were up 4.88% at 12:15 Brasília time on Thursday, while the Ibovespa, Brazil’s main stock index, was down 0.09%, Exame reported. By the close the stock had reversed and lost 4.24%, according to InfoMoney.

The Ibovespa ended the day 1.06% lower at 204,324 points, and the US dollar rose 1.17% against the real, Poder360 reported. InfoMoney noted that the Magalu stock was still up almost 40% for the month.

Exame said Magalu shares gained 55.09% in September, the biggest monthly rise since January 2023. The company publishes third-quarter results on 9 November after the market closes, according to its investor-relations page.

What It Means for You

If you invest in Latin American retail, the move shows a big chain borrowing rivals’ audiences instead of relying only on its own app. The stock swung from a midday gain to a closing loss on the day of the announcement.

For Amazon and Mercado Libre, a retailer once seen mainly as a competitor now also supplies goods to their platforms. Brazilian shoppers can now buy Magalu’s stock on all three marketplaces, with Magalog handling delivery.

Exame reported a second-quarter adjusted net loss of R$50.4 million (about US$9.9 million) at Magalu. A year earlier it posted a profit of R$1.8 million (about US$350,000).

Conversions use about 5.09 reais to the US dollar, Thursday’s close. The 9 November results will show whether the platform deals lift sales.

What Is Not Known

The financial terms, commissions and sales targets of the Shopee agreement have not been published. How many products Magalu will list on the Shopee marketplace is also not stated.

Magalu has not yet calculated what ending Brazil’s six-day work week will cost it, Exame reported. The Senate approved that change on 14 October, as the Rio Times covered in its report on the new five-day work week.
