Leonardo DiCaprio Steps Up Anti-Bolsonaro Campaign on Social Media

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Leonardo DiCaprio used social media to endorse the Defund Bolsonaro campaign, which urges foreign consumers to challenge brands and governments that benefit from President Jair Bolsonaro‘s environmental policies.

The international campaign instigated by Brazilian activists highlights the government’s inefficiency in preserving the environment, particularly the Amazon.

In the American actor’s post, he shared the video in English produced by the movement, which shows European cities, houses, and monuments in flames, in a reference to the patch burns in the Amazon.

The campaign aims to alert foreigners to how they can act in their daily lives. To this end, it points out that consumption habits can be linked to the devastation of the Amazon rainforest, in favor of agribusiness, cattle raising, mining, and wood extraction.

The word defund, “to de-finance”, is already being used in the United States by the Black Lives Matter movement in relation to police forces.
