Brazil breaks record for coffee export revenues through August

According to the Infobae portal, Brazil, the world’s leading coffee producer and supplier, generated US$5.904 billion in revenues from coffee exports between January and August, setting a new record, the industry’s employers’ association announced Monday.

The sale of the bean abroad increased by 61.4% compared to the same period last year.

Despite the increase in sales, the volume of beans sold abroad was lower in the first eight months of the year, according to the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).

The South American country exported 25.3 million bags (at 60 kilos) during the period, 5.3% less than last year’s first eight months.

According to Cecafé, the increase in revenues was due to “high” grain prices in Brazil and abroad and to exchange rate fluctuations that caused the dollar to appreciate against the Brazilian real.

Exports totaled 2.7 million bags in August, down 2.5% from the same month in 2021, while revenue rose 49.5% to US$655.3 million.

According to the report, the United States remains the leading buyer of Brazilian coffee, with 5.2 million bags this year, followed by Germany (4.5 million), Belgium (2.1 million), Italy (2.0 million,) and Japan (1.1 million).

Regarding coffee varieties, Arabica continues to lead with 85.9% of foreign sales, followed by soluble (9.9%) and Robusta (4.1%).

Last year, the South American country exported 40.3 million bags of bean coffee, 9.7% less than in 2020. Despite this decline, revenue from foreign sales increased by 10.3%.
