Bolsonaro says food prices will fall in Brazil

President Jair Bolsonaro said Tuesday (13) that food prices in Brazil will “fall.”

He explained that except for milk, prices for all products in the basic food basket are “going down.”

“Brazil is growing, food prices will go down, and no one will have to worry about a shortage of food,” he said in an interview with SBT when asked about price control in a possible second term.

Despite the decline in inflation recorded in the last two months, the food price index has continued to accelerate, from 13.9% to 14.7% in the previous 12 months.

Moderator Ratinho asked Bolsonaro three times about food prices and inflation.

The chief executive acknowledged the high price of milk, which has increased 60% in the last 12 months, according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

In August, the product registered a decline of 1.78%, but a high of 74% cumulatively for the year.

At two points, the President stated that family farming should help curb new food increases and related this to the increasing allocation of land titles in his administration.

“With the increase in family farming, which helps feed workers, this will continue to decline,” he said.

The President explained that the price increase is related to the impact of the pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine.
