RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of homicides in Brazil fell from 50,448 in 2020 to 47,765 last year.

The drop was 6.2%, according to the Brazilian Yearbook of Public Safety (Anuário Brasileiro de Segurança Pública), released this Tuesday, June 28.

With this result, Brazil accumulates 20.4% of all homicides worldwide.

Amapá is the state with the highest percentage of intentional violent deaths, with 53.8%.

Next come Bahia (44.9%), Amazonas (39.1%), Ceará (37%), and Roraima (35.5%).

The victims are mostly black (77.9%), young (50%), and male (91.3%).

Most (76%) of the intentional violent deaths recorded in the Brazilian territory occurred via firearms.

From 2018 to 2022, the number of firearm registrations rose 473%.
