Brazil Extends Agricultural Expertise to Africa in Fight Against Hunger

Brazil has offered to share its agricultural technology and management models with African countries to combat hunger and promote food security.

The announcement came during the Second Brazil-Africa Dialogue on Food Security taking place in Brasilia this week, with 150 representatives from over 40 African nations attending.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva acknowledged Brazil’s historical debt to Africa during the event. He stated this debt could be repaid through solidarity and technology transfer rather than monetary compensation.

The president emphasized that Brazil‘s agricultural expertise must be shared globally as a tool against hunger and poverty. “We owe 350 years in which this country exploited a large portion of the African people,” Lula said to the agriculture ministers from African Union nations.

He added that Brazil can help African countries produce what Brazil currently grows. The dialogue aims to strengthen relations between Brazil and African nations through cooperation based on solidarity and sustainable development.

The event includes field visits covering family farming, soil health, and technologies for coping with drought. Brazil’s agricultural success story offers valuable lessons for African development.

Brazil’s Agricultural Boom Fuels Growing Partnership with Africa

In less than 30 years, Brazil transformed from a food importer to one of the world’s largest agricultural exporters. Brazilian Minister Paulo Teixeira highlighted that family farming produces around 1,000 different food varieties, while agribusiness produces only about 15.

Successful cooperation already exists between Brazil and several African nations. Angola’s Minister of Agriculture reported that 75 Angolan technicians received training on social supply policies through partnership with Brazil’s National Supply Company (Conab).

The Brazil Africa Institute is training 50 young Angolans in cocoa production as part of a broader initiative. The institute plans to train 1,000 African youths by the end of 2026, with Guinea-Bissau next in line for training in cashew production.

Agricultural trade between the regions has grown significantly. Brazil exported $52.7 billion in agricultural products between January and April 2025, setting a historic record.

The cooperation focuses on three main research areas: regenerative agriculture, food security, and rehabilitation of degraded lands.
