Brazil elections 2022: country gains 2 million young voters in 2022
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil added 2,042,817 voters between the ages of 16 and 18 in 2022. This is according to preliminary data released Thursday (5) by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
The figure shows an increase of 47.5% compared to the first 4 months of 2018 and 57.4% compared to the same period in 2014.
According to TSE, this increase reflects the mobilization of the population during the Week of Young Voters, March 14-18.
During the Week of Young Voters, which took place from March 14 to 18, 96,425 thousand new titles were issued to young people in this age group.
According to the data released on Thursday, an estimated 1.5 million young people have issued the document in the last two months.

The TSE also reported that the system has registered access to records. Over the past 31 days, 8.9 million in-person and virtual visits were made to address election issues.
The preliminary data was released Thursday by TSE President Edson Fachin. The numbers are subject to change, as the concrete data will not be counted and analyzed until July.
Fachin said the number shows “unprecedented performance.” He said the panel still has the task of ensuring that everyone who has regularized their title shows up to the polls on Oct. 2.
“The movement has gained momentum since artists, soccer teams and politicians have been using social media to highlight the importance of voting in the October elections.
On Monday (02), actor Leonardo DiCaprio called on 16- and 17-year-olds on social media to cast their ballots,” the minister said during a speech in court.
ENCOURAGING THE PUBLIC
In February, the TSE recorded the lowest number of youth with voter titles in history. By then, about 830,000 young people had issued the document. In 2018, more than 1.4 million people in the same age group were eligible to vote in the same month.
Given the low turnout of young people, the movement has gained strength since artists, soccer teams and politicians took to social media to highlight the importance of voting in the October elections.
Artists such as Anitta, Juliette, Zeca Pagodinho, Mark Ruffalo, Whindersson Nunes, and Luíza Sonza published messages on social networks asking young people between 16 and 17 to legalize the document.
On Monday (2), actor Leonardo DiCaprio called on the public on social networks. In a post in Portuguese, the American called the people who help young people to pick up the voting card “heroes of democracy”.
The actor had previously spoken out on the issue. On April 28, DiCaprio spoke about teenage voter turnout and the importance of Brazil to the global ecosystem, focusing on the Amazon.
According to the Hollywood actor, what happens in his country has a global impact on the environment.
VOTING TENDENCY
According to the latest PoderData poll, conducted April 24-26, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is the favorite of the younger population.
However, PoderData stratifies the age range from 16 to 24, so it is not possible to provide a concrete figure for voting intention among 16- to 18-year-olds.
The poll shows that 52% of 16- to 24-year-olds vote for the Worker’s Party in the first round. President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is in second place with 33% of voter approval. He is followed by PDT frontrunner Ciro Gomes (5%).
