Boluarte hails Peru’s “critical leap” with initiation of OECD accession process

Peru’s President, Dina Boluarte, affirmed on Friday that her country has taken a “critical leap” by presenting a memorandum to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to initiate the process of joining the organization.

Submitting this document to the OECD signifies an essential stride for our country, and it is a testament to our growth, stability, economic integrity, reputation, and progress,” Boluarte stated from the Government Palace in Lima, during her third six-month performance review.

She recollected that a delegation, led by the President of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola, was in Paris, France, last Wednesday to officially submit the document that initiates the implementation of the OECD accession roadmap.

She noted that this milestone was achievable “due to the stability and momentum” instilled in the economy, enabling Peru to be “one of the highest growing countries in the region and the one with the lowest inflation in Latin America” this year.

For Boluarte, this development is momentous, as “the OECD does not open its doors to a country lacking credibility, viability, and a promising future.”

In this scenario, she admitted that “the challenge is immense,” as “we need to make progress in a series of institutional reforms, enhance public institutions, increase transparency, and provide quality public services.”

She assured, “We will keep making progress and will achieve the goal, as that is our mission.”

On his part, Otárola considered the submission of the initial memorandum for Peru’s accession to the OECD as a “landmark for the country” and one of the “primary accomplishments” of the administration that started last December.

Peru first voiced its formal interest in becoming an OECD member in 2012.

Since then, this ambition has become a state policy, persistently upheld by successive governments and constantly supported by the Legislative Branch.
