Armed Forces Are Brazil Government’s Anchor, Says Bolsonaro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro said yesterday, December 9th, that the Armed Forces are “the great anchor of his government” and that Brazil has a government that “values the family, worships God and recognizes the value of its military”.

Bolsonaro joined the Armed Forces General Officers for lunch at the Brasília Naval Club.

During his speech, he emphasized the approval in Congress of the bill restructuring the career and changing the military’s pension system and said that the text will be enacted in the coming days. The government expects a surplus of R$2.29 billion (US$572.5 million) in the Union’s coffers by 2022 with the bill’s adoption.

According to Defense Minister Fernando Azevedo, this restructuring is yet another contribution by the military to the government’s fiscal effort.

“It is possibly the most important achievement of 2019, correcting years of old distortions, valuing meritocracy, experience and retaining talent, fundamental requirements to allow Brazil to have modern Armed Forces,” he said.

Earlier, at the Planalto Palace, Bolsonaro attended another ceremony to greet the three forces’ recently promoted General Officers.

“You are responsible, as our ancestors were, also for guaranteeing democracy and freedom. The Armed Forces have always been present at times of tragedy in our country. Some of our colleagues lost their lives, others had their honor shattered, but we stood firm”.

“We are increasingly proving that we are on the right path and we do want a different Brazil. After all, nobody has what we have. What we lack is faith, courage, and determination to change Brazil’s destiny,” Bolsonaro told the new officers.
