Argentine President Alberto Fernández announces that he will not seek reelection

The Argentine President, Alberto Fernández, announced yesterday, Friday, that he will not seek reelection in the general elections scheduled for this year and will seek to “concentrate all his efforts on solving the problems of the Argentine people”.

The President released on social networks the video entitled “My decision”, in which he stated that he would work so that the candidates of the ruling Frente de Todos “guarantee that the right-wing will not return to bring us its nightmare and darkness”.

In the video, he stated that he would concentrate his “effort, commitment and heart” on solving the problems of the Argentines.

The President’s decision is known almost two months before the deadline for the registration of pre-candidates for the Simultaneous and Mandatory Open Primary Elections (PASO), to be held on August 13.

The PASO will define the candidates who will be eligible for the general elections scheduled for October 22 of this year, when Argentines will elect President and vice-president for the 2023-2027 period, as well as 130 deputies and 24 senators, in addition to 43 members of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur).

To be eligible for the October elections, candidates must obtain at least 1.5 percent of the total vote in the PASO in August.

“I believe that the PASO is the vehicle for society to select the best men and women of our front who will best represent us in the next general elections,” said Fernandez, who began his term on December 10, 2019, and will conclude it on December 10 of this year.

“Low incomes hurt us. We are pained by the projects and dreams that could not materialize. But despite so many difficulties, I have one certainty, I did not take a single measure against our people,” he said regarding the country’s social situation.

Argentina recorded an inflation rate of 104.3 percent year-on-year last March, reporting a 7.7 percent rise in prices in the third month, as written on April 14 by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses.

Fernández expressed his confidence in “overcoming” the situation and pledged to “continue working for growth and distribution”.

He said that “beyond the internal criticisms and the greater or lesser support received, I do not have a single adversary in the Frente de Todos. On the contrary, I recognize in them a common destiny. My adversaries are those we must face in the general elections”.

The Argentine President urged us to go through this “electoral time” with the “greatest respect for our contenders”.
