After cold front and frost, summer heat returns to southern Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – With the surprising arrival of a cold front in mid-summer, polar air penetrated Brazil’s South and produced a drop in temperatures, which fluctuated between 5ºC and 10°C at dawn in many cities. The higher elevations of the Serrana Region of Santa Catarina even recorded frost last Sunday.

However, the week that began cold and dry, will tend to end more humid and hot. The dry and cold air will lose momentum over the next few days, and conditions for frost at dawn are no longer present as temperatures increase.

The sun will shine in all three southern states during the week and afternoon temperatures will rise. It will be hot in many cities, with highs of around 30°C.

Another highlight is the rise in humidity. Tuesday, February 9th, has already begun with rain in the southern areas of Rio Grande do Sul. There is a risk of storms in these areas, particularly in areas bordering Uruguay. In other Rio Grande do Sul areas, including Porto Alegre, scattered rainfall in the afternoon is expected. Scattered rain is also likely in areas along the coast of Santa Catarina and Paraná this Tuesday. Nevertheless, the sun will come out and heat up these areas.

Starting Wednesday the rain will spread over the region, although scattered and temporary. Rainfall may occasionally be heavier and accompanied by lightning, but overcast weather is not expected.

By the end of the week the weather will tend to become more unstable. Cloudy conditions will increase and the risk of storms will also be higher.
