Vista Energy is one of the leading independent oil producers in Vaca Muerta, the vast shale formation in Argentina’s Patagonia that has turned the country into a rising force in world energy.

Founded and led by Miguel Galuccio, a former head of Argentina’s state oil company YPF, Vista is incorporated in Mexico and listed in both New York and Mexico City. It reports in US dollars.

Inside the Vista Energy Second Quarter

Total revenue jumped about 89% from a year earlier to roughly US$1.15 billion, as Vista sold far more oil into a firm price environment.

The headline number was cash generation. Adjusted EBITDA climbed about 99%, close to doubling, to around US$805 million.

Net income rose about 37% to roughly US$322 million, a record for the company, even if it fell short of some analysts’ loftier profit forecasts.

Underpinning it all was production of about 156,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, up 32%, with oil alone at roughly 135,000 barrels a day.

The Equinor Deal Changes the Scale

The quarter was shaped by the closing of Vista’s acquisition of Equinor’s stake in a Vaca Muerta asset, a deal that, together with the company’s own drilling, lifted it to a new size.

Buying producing acreage is the fastest way for a shale company to add barrels, and management framed the move as leaving Vista well placed to capture the upside if oil prices stay strong.

Why Vaca Muerta Matters

Vaca Muerta is central to Argentina’s economic hopes. More oil and gas from the formation means more exports, more dollars and a stronger balance of payments for a country long starved of hard currency.

Fast growth carries risk, though: heavy spending, reliance on a single basin and exposure to swings in the global oil price can all cut the other way if the market turns.

What It Means

For investors, near-doubled cash flow and record output strengthen the case that Vista has graduated from an up-and-comer to a serious mid-sized producer.

For Argentina, the numbers are more evidence that Vaca Muerta is delivering the volumes the country is banking on.
