Venezuela to cede one million hectares of farmland to Iran

Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, will allow Iran to use one million hectares of land for cultivation “as the world is facing a shortage of strategic reserves.”

It was confirmed by Iranian Deputy Economy Minister Mohsen Kousheshtabar, who highlighted the cooperation between the two countries and their increasingly strong alliance.

In June, Maduro visited Iran, where he held talks with his counterpart Ebrahim Raisi. The two countries signed a 20-year agreement on strategic cooperation “in all fields.”

“There are major cooperation fronts between Iran and Venezuela,” Maduro said at a press conference with Raisi.

“At the level of energy, oil, natural gas, refineries, petrochemicals, at the level of finance and defense,” he summarized. “A truly amazing map of cooperation,” Maduro added.

For his part, Raisi stressed that relations between the two countries are “strategic” in the face of “imperialism” that refers to the United States.

“The signing of the 20-year cooperation document is a sign of the willingness of the high authorities of both countries to expand relations in various fields,” Raisi said, stressing that Venezuela has offered “total resistance to the sanctions and threats of imperialism,” “sanctions and threats” that the Iranian people have suffered from “for more than 40 years.”

At the time, the leaders did not go into the agreement details, but Maduro emphasized cooperation to “consolidate the sovereignty and food security of our countries.” The announcement that Iran will use the one million hectares appears to be along those lines.

Along with Russia, China, Cuba, and Turkey, Iran is one of the Venezuelan regime’s most important allies. And like Caracas, Teheran is also subject to strict U.S. sanctions.

Bilateral relations between these two oil producers were already close under Hugo Chávez and further strengthened under his successor Maduro.
