Venezuela celebrates reestablishment of ties with Brazil and highlights “new starting point” in the relationship

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, celebrated tonight that diplomatic and political relations with Brazil have been formally re-established. He considered this “a great step” for his nation’s foreign policy.

“The reestablishment with good spirit and commitment of bilateral relations between Brazil and Venezuela is a great step”, Maduro assured, referring to the official ceremony of delivery of the credential letters of the Venezuelan ambassador, Manuel Vadell, to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Maduro emphasized that “the delivery of the credentials of Manuel Vadell to President Lula constitutes a new starting point for the consolidation of the union between both brotherly peoples”.

It is important to note that relations between Venezuela and Brazil have been suspended since 2019 due to an aggressive foreign policy by the former Brazilian government headed by Jair Bolsonaro.

The former president did not recognize, together with other presidents of the region, the authority of President Nicolás Maduro as head of state.

Such disavowal was part of a strategy of the United States to change Venezuela’s government.

However, the inauguration of progressive President Lula da Silva allowed both nations to reestablish their political relations fully.

With the reception of the credentials, the reestablishment of relations between the two countries, which share an extensive border, is formally officialized.

Both nations have been working for weeks on progressively reestablishing their ties.

In recent days, high-level representatives of the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) held working sessions with Maduro and other Venezuelan leaders to review, evaluate and coordinate bilateral cooperation plans.
