The fully drafted bill had been discussed in a parliamentary session, where the Uruguayan Senate Chamber voted in favor of its implementation and will now submit it to the South American country’s House of Representatives for further consideration.

Once passed, the law would see the General Directorate of Casinos of the Ministry of Economy and Finance take over online gambling regulation in Uruguay.

A nationwide registry would be maintained to monitor all online gambling operators.

A fund would also be established within the General Directorate of Casinos to allocate a minimum of five percent and a maximum of eight percent of gross revenues to prevent harm from online gambling and the financing of therapies.

If licensed operators fail to comply with the provisions of the bill, they could receive a warning, a fine ranging from US$245.20 to US$2,451, or a suspension of their license.

Once approved, the law will enter into force the day after the Uruguayan Executive approves the regulations.
