Ukraine’s Zelensky seeks Brazil’s presence at Summit discussing war termination

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, announced over the weekend that the Ukrainian administration intends to invite Brazil to attend a summit to negotiate peace and terminate the war in Eastern Europe.

Yermak affirmed that Brazil would be a key participant at the inaugural International Peace Summit.

This gathering, proposed by Zelensky, aims to strike an agreement with Russia on Ukrainian terms to cease the hostilities.

Nonetheless, details regarding the time and venue of the event are yet to be finalized.

Yermak, in an interview with CNN Brazil, said, “On behalf of the President, our Foreign Ministry and I are collaborating to organize the first International Peace Summit to deliberate on the solution suggested by President Zelensky.

We believe the summit will not be complete without the involvement of the global south nations.”

Countries from the so-called Global South that Yermak mentioned also include India, China, Saudi Arabia, and several African nations.

Zelensky’s top aide further expressed his desire to see Brazil taking a leading role in the execution of their Peace Plan.

Yermak informed CNN Brazil that he is receptive to dialogue with Brasilia, appreciating his discussions with Celso Amorim, special advisor on international affairs to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Amorim visited Kyiv in May.

“Ukraine is keen on strengthening its relationship with Brazil. Ukraine is highly interested in forming a strategic partnership with Brazil. And we are prepared to do all within our means to accomplish this objective,” he stated.

This invitation extended to Brazil arrives three weeks after Amorim attempts to mitigate the crisis caused by Lula’s remarks on the responsibility for the conflict.

The presidential advisor commented that “reaching a consensus will not be straightforward. Both sides must conclude that the cost of war outweighs the price of certain concessions.”

Besides discussing the war, Yermak advocated for improved Ukraine-Brazil relations, primarily in trade interactions, emphasizing no need to “wait until the war ends.”

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry declared that it has yet to receive an invitation from the Ukrainian government to join any peace conference.

However, they expressed Brazil’s interest in participating and contributing to resolving the conflict.
