Trinidad and Tobago Expands Economic Cooperation with China

Prime Minister Keith Rowley expressed strong satisfaction with ongoing Trinidad and Tobago-China cooperation at the recent ANR Robinson International Airport terminal inauguration.

The state-of-the-art terminal marks another milestone in the growing partnership between the two nations. “We have had opportunities to work with China. We’re very pleased about what we are doing,” Rowley stated during the March 16 ceremony.

The project represents the largest transportation infrastructure development in Trinidad and Tobago in recent years. The new terminal spans 268,000 square meters and will accommodate up to 3 million passengers annually.

China Railway Construction Corporation constructed the facility, creating approximately 600 local jobs during peak periods. Trinidad and Tobago became the first Caribbean Community member state to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative in 2018.

This strategic partnership has already delivered significant benefits to the island nation. The Phoenix Park Industrial Estate stands as the flagship Belt and Road project in the Caribbean region. Officially opened in January 2024, this modern industrial complex has attracted 18 investment commitments totaling $485 million.

Located on 144 acres in Point Lisas, the industrial park offers modern infrastructure including 5G technology. Its strategic position just 10 minutes from Point Lisas Port provides businesses easy access to global markets.

Economic Impact and Growing Bilateral Trade

Herbert George, chairman of the National Infrastructure Development Company, highlighted the economic impact. “The terminal will contribute to economic growth and boost our position as an international tourist destination,” he remarked.

Trade between the two countries continues to flourish, growing from $1.29 billion in 2022 to $1.34 billion in 2023. Trinidad and Tobago exports asphalt to China, which paves runways at Beijing Daxing International Airport and parts of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

The nations celebrate their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024. Both countries look toward expanding cooperation in manufacturing, technology transfer, and green development.

Rowley emphasized that Trinidad and Tobago deeply understands the significance of the Belt and Road Initiative. The country continues to seek new opportunities to strengthen this mutually beneficial partnership.
