São Paulo Daily Brief for Monday, May 18, 2026

· May 18, 2026 · 07:00 BRT · 10 min read

Monday opens at 17°C in São Paulo with the high at 20°C and 65% rain, a cold wet day with the frente fria at full strength. Rodízio returns Monday with plates 1 and 2 prohibited in the Centro Expandido 7h–10h and 17h–20h after the weekend suspension. The national story belongs to Carlo Ancelotti naming the 26-man Brazil World Cup squad at the Museu do Amanhã 17h45 BRT, broadcast across Globo, SBT, SporTV, ESPN, CazéTV and Disney+. Three SP-club names are on the FIFA pre-list of 55: Hugo Souza (Corinthians), Andreas Pereira (Palmeiras) and Neymar (Santos), with Neymar’s physical condition the most-watched call. Sunday: Botafogo 3–1 Corinthians at the Nilton Santos with an Arthur Cabral hat-trick, pushing the Timão back into the Z4 at 17th.

This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Rio de Janeiro/São Paulo daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.

03What to See & DoCULTURE

TODAY’S PICK — MASP — AVENIDA PAULISTA

Damián Ortega, Matéria e Energia — the first weekday of the new MASP solo

After the free-Sunday opening crowd, Monday is the first proper weekday for the Damián Ortega retrospective at MASP. Rooms open 10h, the regular admission R$70 / R$35 meia, and you get the run of the Lina Bo Bardi-designed second floor without the queue. Three weeks in advance of the Virada Cultural on May 23–24 (when MASP opens 24 hours and the queue returns), this is the optimal slot to see the show. Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, Rodrigo Moura and Yudi Rafael, the retrospective covers more than thirty years from the Mexico City artist (b. 1967).

What to look for: Cosmic Thing (2002), the exploded Volkswagen Beetle suspended on cables, the work that made Ortega’s international name when it debuted at the Venice Biennale; the photographic series investigating object-as-diagram; the tijolo and pedra works that read everyday material as social and political geometry. Per Pedrosa in the catalogue, “Ortega’s practice converts the everyday object into a vector of social, economic and political narrative.”

Where to go after: ten minutes south on the Avenida Paulista to the Itaú Cultural for Mestre Didi (free), or seven minutes north to the IMS Paulista for the photography programme (free). Tue/Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun 10h–18h · Wed 10h–20h · Closed Mondays (the brief refers to Tuesday and after; Monday-open option below).

THE MONDAY-OPEN OPTION — CCBB SÃO PAULO — CENTRO

CCBB São Paulo — the one Centro flagship open Monday

MASP is closed Mondays, Pinacoteca is closed Mondays, MIS is closed Mondays. The one major Centro flagship that opens Monday is CCBB São Paulo at R. Álvares Penteado 112, with rotating programmes free entry, Wed–Mon 9h–20h. The current programme includes the architectural-photography exhibition on Lina Bo Bardi-designed SESC Pompeia and a video installation on the lower floor. The building itself is the 1928 modernist headquarters of the former Banco do Brasil, restored in 2001, worth the visit on its own architectural merit.

Combine route: CCBB SP (14h–17h) → walk five minutes to Praça da Sé → metrô Linha 1 Azul to Paulista station for Avenida Paulista shop windows. Wed–Mon 9h–20h · Free · Rua Álvares Penteado 112.

TONIGHT, AFTER 19H

The SP Monday quiet — Casa de Francisca and the bossa-jazz route

Monday is the quietest night in the SP live-music week. Casa de Francisca at R. José Maria Lisboa 190, Jardim Paulista runs the Monday jazz session from 21h, R$80 cover with the standards-and-Brazilian-jazz rotation. The room itself is one of the most beautiful intimate venues in South America. Bar Beto at R. Aspicuelta 590, Vila Madalena runs the Monday samba-de-mesa with the regulars from 20h, R$25 cover. SESC Avenida Paulista runs the Monday cinema programme on the top-floor open-air screen.
