The show’s title says it all: “A minha História (Que é um ESCÂNDALO).” Watusi has been performing since 1968 and the story she tells tonight is not a nostalgia act — it is a lived document of what it meant to be a Black Brazilian woman building an international career in the 1970s and 80s. She chose her own stage name after reading about an African tribe. Hélcio Milito of the Tamba Trio directed her early career at CBS Brasil. A poster in a bookshop caught the eye of the Brasiliana Ballet director; she toured Europe and Asia for six years. In Barcelona she starred at the Teatro Victória. Then Jacki Clerico and Ruggero Angeletti of the Moulin Rouge came to find her — and she became the star of “Frénésie 80,” the only Brazilian with her name on the Parisian marquee, the highest-paid vedette in Europe. She shared stages with Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers, Charles Aznavour, Dalida, Village People. She returned to Brazil, starred at the Scala Rio for 1,500 days alongside Grande Otelo, dated Robert De Niro during the filming of The Mission. Tonight’s repertoire runs from Nina Simone and Edith Piaf to samba and bossa nova, with a new homenagem to Luiz Melodia: “Negro Gato do Estácio.” Part of the Mês das Mulheres — the penultimate night before Sunday’s closing.

Friday is when the Scenarium earns its global reputation. The three-storey casarão on Rua do Lavradio fills completely: the main-stage samba is louder, the gafieira dance floor is packed, the seven antique-filled environments across three floors throb with the kind of energy that only a Friday crowd in a 19th-century building can generate. The cover pushes to R$40–60. Arrive before 8 pm for a table — after 9 pm you are standing. Advance booking through Sympla is advisable. Friday is also the night when the Scenarium’s kitchen is most active: the petiscos come fast, the bar runs long, and the venue pushes past 2 am. If you have one night in Lapa this week, this is it.

Friday at the Gema is the biggest night of its weekly run. The Happy Hour still applies — free entry from 6:30 pm, dose dupla caipirinha, Original R$12.99, half-price petiscos — but arrive early because the three-room casarão on Mem de Sá fills by 9 pm. The main show at 8:30 pm plays to a crowd that’s been building energy through two rounds of caipirinhas, and the atmosphere is distinctly different from Tuesday or Wednesday: louder, hotter, more physical. Friday is also the best night to combine the Gema with the Scenarium — the two-venue Lapa crawl that is the definitive Friday-night experience in Lapa.

Friday is the longest night at the Beco — 6 pm to 2 am, eight hours of samba de raiz with no cover. The alleyway on Rua Joaquim Silva transforms after 10 pm on Fridays: the crowd spills out of the bar, the sound carries down the street, and the energy approaches the outdoor party atmosphere that makes Lapa famous. On a Friday when both Rio Scenarium and Carioca da Gema are packed and charging covers, the Beco offers the free alternative with the same Lapa electricity. The samba is more raw, the crowd more local, the beer colder for the price. The natural Friday crawl: Gema HH at 6:30, Beco at 9, Scenarium at 11, back to the Beco for the 1 am set.

The Monday roda at Pedra do Sal is the famous one — the 20-year tradition, the Largo João da Baiana packed with hundreds. But the Friday roda is its less-known counterpart: a different organising group, a different energy, a different crowd. The Friday session at the birthplace of carioca samba in Saúde runs from around 6 pm, outdoor and free. It is not as large or as choreographed as the Monday event, which makes it more intimate and less tourist-heavy. The carved stone staircase, the Pequena África neighbourhood, the sound of samba floating through the narrow streets — all of that is the same. Ride-hailing for departure. VLT Parada dos Museus is the nearest stop.
