The silence is over. After two days of stillness — the deepest breath between pré-Carnaval and the main event — the streets erupt again this Wednesday. And they erupt at 7 a.m. The Bloco da Anitta takes Rua Primeiro de Março in Centro, on the Circuito Preta Gil, drawing hundreds of thousands before most of the city has had coffee. By noon, blocos are parading from Botafogo to Laranjeiras to Santa Teresa to Lapa. By evening, a second wave fills Centro, Catete, Ipanema and the Zona Norte. This is the first day of Carnaval week proper. The Série Ouro opens the Sambódromo on Friday. The Grupo Especial follows on Sunday. The countdown is on. Tonight, after the daytime madness subsides, the Blue Note Rio hosts a bossa nova tribute to Tom Jobim on the Copacabana oceanfront — pianist Adriana Quadros performing “As Cores do Tom” with a stellar quartet. In Lapa, the Carioca da Gema keeps its nightly samba lit, and the Beco do Rato’s roda rolls on in the tightest room on Rua Joaquim Silva. Tomorrow the Rio Scenarium opens its six-night Carnaval special with the Banda do Síndico. Tonight the fuse is lit. The rest of the week is an explosion.

DRESSFantasia / Carnaval

Why we picked it: The Bloco da Anitta is the event that cracks Carnaval week wide open. Originally founded as the Bloco das Poderosas, it is now one of the 20 largest street blocos in Brazil, drawing hundreds of thousands to Rua Primeiro de Março on the Circuito Preta Gil — the same route used by the Cordão da Bola Preta and the Fervo da Lud on Saturday. Today it belongs to Anitta.

The 2026 edition carries the “Cosmos” theme — astrology, zodiac, and the universe — carried over from the Ensaios da Anitta touring show that ran January through February. Expect the full hit catalogue: “Envolver,” “Vai Malandra,” “Show das Poderosas,” “Downtown,” plus guest appearances and surprise collaborations that have become the bloco’s signature. The concentração begins at 7h and the cortejo runs through the morning — plan to arrive by 6h30 if you want any proximity to the trio elétrico.

Practicalities: Free entry — this is a street bloco. The Circuito Preta Gil runs along Rua Primeiro de Março near the CCBB and Praça XV. Metro stations Uruguaiana and Carioca are the closest — arrive before 7h, as roads close and stations flood. Bring: water, sunscreen, a charged phone, minimal cash, and nothing you can’t afford to lose. Pickpockets are active in megablocos. Leave by noon — the sun and the crowd are unforgiving. The bloco is rated 18+ (classificação 18 anos).

Why we picked it: On the last night before the Blue Note Rio launches its full Carnaval programming (Thursday through Tuesday, featuring the Banda do Síndico, Casuarina, Nilze Carvalho and more), the house offers something quieter and more luminous: a tribute to Tom Jobim. “As Cores do Tom” — the colours of Tom — celebrates the composer who gave the world “Garota de Ipanema,” “Wave,” and “Chega de Saudade.”

Singer Adriana Quadros leads a quartet featuring João Cantiber on violões and musical direction, Cyd Alvarez on piano, Dodo Ferreira on acoustic bass, and Luisinho Sobral on drums, with percussionist Iago Freitas rounding out the ensemble. The repertoire traces the arc of Brazilian bossa nova — from the early ruptures of “Chega de Saudade” to the late-career elegance of “Águas de Março.” In the Blue Note’s intimate Copacabana room, with the Atlantic visible through the windows, it’s the perfect counterpoint to a day spent in a megabloco.

Practicalities: Tickets from R$60 on Eventim. Happy hour on the calçadão and piano bar from 17h (free entry). The 20h ticketed session requires access from 19h. A possible second session at 22h30 depending on demand. Full dinner and cocktail menu. Metro Cardeal Arcoverde is a 10-minute walk. Dress smart casual — this is not bloco attire.

Casa de Samba
TIMEHappy hour from 18h · Show ~21h
PRICEFree until show · Cover varies
VIBESamba, MPB, gafieira
DRESSCasual

Why we picked it: The Carioca da Gema — the bar that sparked Lapa’s revival 25 years ago — is the most reliable samba house in Rio, every night of the week. Tonight, with Carnaval week beginning and the neighbourhood starting to hum with pre-weekend energy, the house runs its familiar programme: happy hour from 18h (free entry, half-price caipirinhas), followed by a live samba or MPB act from around 21h.

The Carioca da Gema also fields its own bloco, which parades on Saturday 14 February at the Arcos da Lapa. Tonight is the preview — the house at a warmer temperature than Tuesday, with Carnaval energy now palpable on Mem de Sá. Check @barcariocadagema for the specific Wednesday act.

Practicalities: Open from 18h to 2h (Wed schedule). Av. Mem de Sá, 79. Walkable from metro Cinelândia or Carioca. Tickets via Sympla or at the door. Air-conditioned — a genuine advantage when the streets are 35°C. Full food menu.

4Beco do Rato
Roda de Samba
TIMEFrom ~20:00
PRICEVaries (small cover)
VIBESamba de raiz, intimate
DRESSCasual / standing room

Why we picked it: The Beco do Rato runs its own bloco on Saturday 14 February — which means tonight, three days out, the bar is running hot with Carnaval energy. This is Lapa’s rawest samba venue: a tiny, standing-room-only space at Rua Joaquim Silva, 11, where a roda de samba unfolds inches from your face. No stage. No VIP. Just percussion, voice, and cachaça.

On a Wednesday in Carnaval week, the Beco draws a crowd that’s been at the Bloco da Anitta since 7 a.m. and is not ready to stop. Expect a louder, sweatier, more exuberant room than the quiet Tuesdays of last week.

Practicalities: Extremely limited capacity — arrive early. Rua Joaquim Silva, 11, walkable from Carioca da Gema. Cash is useful. Check @becodorato on Instagram for Wednesday confirmation.

Alternatives

Senta Que Eu Empurro — Largo do Machado, Catete · 18h · Free

Evening bloco at the Largo do Machado — one of the first evening blocos of Carnaval week. The Catete crowd, outdoor setting, metro-accessible (Largo do Machado station). A perfect sundown option if you’re staying in the Zona Sul.

Rola Preguiçosa — Tarda Mas Não Falha — Rua Maria Quitéria / Epitácio Pessoa, Ipanema · 18h · Free

An evening bloco in Ipanema — “the lazy one shows up late but never fails.” Starts at 18h as the sun drops, making it a Zona Sul alternative that doesn’t require an early alarm or a trip to Centro.

Mulheres de Chico — Praça Almirante Júlio de Noronha, 86, Leme · 15h · Free

An afternoon bloco in Leme dedicated to the music of Chico Buarque, performed and led by women. Starts at 15h in the peaceful Praça do Leme, a few blocks from the Blue Note. Combine with the happy hour at 17h.

Badalo de Santa Teresa — Largo das Neves, Santa Teresa · 18h · Free

Rio Scenarium opens tomorrow (Thursday 12 Feb) — Rua do Lavradio, 20, Lapa · From 20h · $$

The Scenarium’s six-night Carnaval special begins Thursday with the Banda do Síndico — the musicians who backed Tim Maia. Friday brings Ceceu Valença (forró to frevo), Saturday the group Casuarina. Book ahead — it sells out during Carnaval.

Embaixadores da Folia — Av. Nilo Peçanha / Buraco do Lume, Centro · 18h · Free

Evening bloco in the financial district of Centro. If you’re still in the city centre after the Bloco da Anitta and want more, this one picks up right as the sun sets.

The Sambódromo opens Friday night with the Série Ouro (formerly Série A) schools. The Grupo Especial follows Sunday 15 through Tuesday 17. Tickets on ingressocerto.com. If this is your week, plan today and rest tomorrow — the marathon begins in 48 hours.

Getting Around
Transport intel
Metro
MetrôRio runs normal Wednesday schedules — last trains around midnight. Key morning stations for the Bloco da Anitta: Uruguaiana and Carioca (arrive before 7h — expect crowds). Evening stations: Cardeal Arcoverde for the Blue Note; Cinelândia or Carioca for Lapa; Largo do Machado for the evening blocos in Catete; Botafogo (Exit F) for the bar strip. NFC payments accepted.
Road closures
Major closures return today. The Circuito Preta Gil (Rua Primeiro de Março, Centro) shuts to traffic from early morning for the Bloco da Anitta. Expect rolling closures in Centro, Catete, Laranjeiras, and Ipanema as smaller blocos parade throughout the day. Check the CET-Rio and MetrôRio apps for real-time updates. Driving in Centro is not recommended today.
Ride-hailing
Surge pricing is back. The Bloco da Anitta will spike 99 and Uber prices in Centro from 6–13h. Evening ride-hailing should be more manageable. For Lapa, request pickup from Rua do Lavradio or Av. Mem de Sá. VLT light rail connects Centro to Praça Mauá and the port zone.
Safety note
Carnaval week means megabloco crowds, and megabloco crowds mean pickpockets. At the Bloco da Anitta: use a pochete (fanny pack), keep your phone in a waterproof pouch, carry only the cash you need, and avoid wearing jewellery. In Lapa at night, stick to Mem de Sá, Joaquim Silva, and Lavradio. Use ride-hailing after midnight. Stay hydrated — the combination of sun, alcohol, and dancing takes people down fast.

08
Neighbourhood Picks
By zone
Centro
Today’s epicentre
The Bloco da Anitta takes Rua Primeiro de Março at 7h — the biggest single event of the day. By afternoon, Alegria da República (14h, Rua dos Inválidos) fills Centro with a second wave. Evening blocos Embaixadores da Folia (18h, Nilo Peçanha) and Regula Mas Libera (18h, R. Teófilo Otoni) keep the centre alive after dark. The Circuito Preta Gil route will see road closures and massive crowds through the morning.
Lapa
Samba anchor
Carioca da Gema (18h happy hour, show ~21h) and Beco do Rato (~20h) remain the evening anchors. The Berço do Samba bloco parades at 16h on Travessa do Mosqueira, Lapa. Rio Scenarium opens its Carnaval special tomorrow — tonight is the last night before the neighbourhood goes full tilt. Rua Joaquim Silva and the Arcos da Lapa are walkable between all venues.
Copacabana & Leme
Bossa nova & beach blocos
Blue Note Rio’s “As Cores do Tom” tribute at 20h is the headliner (happy hour from 17h, free entry calçadão). By day, the Sufridus de Copacabana bloco (16h, Praça Inhangá) and Mulheres de Chico in Leme (15h) provide afternoon options. The Banda do Arrxo ran at 10h on Av. Atlântica if you caught it early.
Zona Sul
Blocos all day
The Zona Sul wakes up today: Sem Saída in Botafogo (8h), Bloconce on the Flamengo calçadão (9h), Bafafá in Laranjeiras (10h), Se Essa Rua Fosse Minha in Flamengo (12h), Pela Saco in Botafogo (15h), and evening blocos Senta Que Eu Empurro at Largo do Machado (18h) and Rola Preguiçosa in Ipanema (18h). This is the first day the whole Zona Sul has been active since pré-Carnaval weekend. Botafogo’s bar strip (Rua Voluntários da Pátria) runs all evening for post-bloco drinks.
