Sunday opens at 22°C in Rio climbing to 25°C with just 10% rain, the second day of a clean weekend window and the day the city is built for. It is the strongest Sunday for the museum circuit and the city: MAM Rio is free on Sundays with the Hélio Oiticica and Rubem Valentim shows running, the CCBB Rio’s Yoshitaka Amano retrospective is free every day five minutes away, and the Aterro do Flamengo closes to cars for the full Sunday cycle from Glória to Botafogo. The beaches are at full Sunday capacity, with Posto 9 Ipanema and Posto 5 Copacabana on lifeguard rotation 8h-18h and the Avenida Atlântica closed to cars on the Copacabana stretch. Saturday’s Maracanã marquee landed 3-0 to Palmeiras in front of a Brasileirão-record 71,200 crowd, and the city’s eyes now turn to the IRPF refund batch on May 29 and the Fluminense Libertadores decider Wednesday.

This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Rio de Janeiro/São Paulo daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.

03What to See & DoCULTURE

TODAY’S PICK — MAM RIO — ATERRO DO FLAMENGO

MAM Rio free Sunday — Hélio Oiticica and Rubem Valentim in Affonso Reidy’s modernist landmark

If you give one Sunday to Rio culture this month, give it to the MAM Rio at Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, set inside Affonso Reidy’s 1958 reinforced-concrete pavilion in the Burle Marx Aterro do Flamengo gardens — and free every Sunday. The day pairs better than any other: the Aterro is closed to cars Sunday, so the approach is a walk or cycle along the bay, and the museum is the natural pause inside that route. Two shows anchor the visit: the rotating Hélio Oiticica selection from the museum’s holdings, and the Rubem Valentim retrospective in the central gallery, both running through July.

What to look for: in the Oiticica rooms, the Parangolés capes the artist made for the Mangueira samba school, the Bólides coloured-pigment containers, and the documentation of the 1969 Whitechapel installation. In the Valentim selection, the Afro-Brazilian symbolic geometry that runs from Candomblé iconography through to hard-edge abstraction, the artist’s argument that Brazilian modernism does not have to come through European routes. The Reidy building is the third exhibit: the cantilevered concrete spans were a structural argument when they opened and remain one of the great twentieth-century Rio interiors.

Where to go after: a walk south through the Aterro to Botafogo for a beach lunch, or north to the Praça XV and the ferry to Niterói on the Sunday timetable. Free Sundays · Tue–Fri 12h–19h, Sat–Sun 11h–19h · Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — CCBB RIO — CENTRO

CCBB Rio’s Yoshitaka Amano — the pop counterweight, free every day, twenty minutes by VLT

If MAM is the modernist Brazilian argument, the CCBB Rio is the pop-illustration counterweight, and the two pair as a Sunday-into-evening Centro extension. The Yoshitaka Amano show Além da Fantasia runs through July 7, free every day, and makes the case that the Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D designer is a serious painter who happens to have worked in games and anime. The Sunday Centro is quiet, the room is air-conditioned, and the queues that build through the week are minimal first thing.

Combine route: MAM (11h–13h) → walk or VLT through the Aterro to Cinelândia → five-minute walk to CCBB (14h–17h) → Praça XV and the ferry to Niterói for the sunset crossing across the bay. Free · Wed–Mon 9h–20h · Rua Primeiro de Março 66.

TONIGHT, AFTER 18H

The Sunday roda and the Cinelândia open-air evening

Sunday in Rio rewinds at a slower tempo, and the music rooms set their programmes earlier. The Pedra do Sal roda at Largo João da Baiana, Saúde runs the Sunday samba from 19h, free, the second of its weekly outings in the historic quilombo square and the most authentic open-air samba night in the city after Saturday. Rio Scenarium at R. do Lavradio 20 runs the Sunday programme from 19h, R$50 cover, lighter than the Saturday set.

For samba in the Zona Sul: the Beco das Sardinhas roda runs the Sunday programme outdoors in Centro, free, the corner-bar formation around R. Miguel Couto. Carioca da Gema at R. Mem de Sá 79 runs the Sunday set from 20h, R$45, the bairro reference for serious samba.

For jazz: Blue Note Rio at the Lagoa runs the Sunday set from 19h with the panoramic terrace lit for the early sunset, book ahead. The Cinelândia open-air bars on Av. Rio Branco fill from 17h with the post-beach crowd, the most relaxed Sunday evening pole in Centro.

SUNDAY CAR-FREE PERIMETERS

Sunday is Rio at its most walkable: the Aterro do Flamengo is closed to cars 7h–18h from Glória to Botafogo, the Avenida Atlântica’s Copacabana stretch is closed to cars 7h–18h, the Avenida Vieira Souto on Ipanema is closed to cars 7h–18h, and the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas perimeter is closed to cars for the full day cycle. MetrôRio runs Sunday 7h–23h on Linhas 1, 2 and 4, with reduced frequency from 19h. The VLT runs the Centro-Praça Mauá circuit on the Sunday timetable.

Beaches: Posto 9 Ipanema and Posto 5 Copacabana on full Sunday rotation, lifeguard cover 8h–18h, the Posto 12 Leblon family stretch on the same timetable. The Praça XV ferry to Niterói runs the Sunday timetable, the open-deck crossing one of the city’s classic Sunday outings. For the Nilton Santos match, Estação Triagem on Linha 2 is the closest stop. 09Business & MarketsFINANCE

Markets are closed Sunday. The Ibovespa ended last week down 0.81% at 176,209.61 points, the sixth straight weekly loss — the longest streak since 2018 — and the dollar finished at R$5.0289 after a 0.57% climb on Friday. The correction has run since the index touched 199,000 points in April, driven by foreign-investor outflows that have rotated capital out of Brazilian equities through the second quarter. Friday tracked Wall Street caution after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said US-Iran progress was real but “not there yet,” and oil rose on the same news.

The week ahead has the Receita Federal first IRPF refund batch landing Friday May 29, a record R$16 billion reaching 8.75 million taxpayers, with the filing deadline May 30. The May 28 Bacen Focus survey is the next data point — the market reads it for the IPCA 2026 path, still tracking above the BCB 4.5% upper-target band.

The Selic remains at 14.75%; next Copom meeting June 17–18. The Ibovespa still holds a gain of about 9.4% for 2026, the year-to-date cushion the seventh-week-of-losses correction has not fully eroded.

When is the first 2026 income-tax refund paid?

The Receita Federal will pay the first 2026 income-tax refund batch on Friday May 29, a record R$16 billion reaching 8.75 million taxpayers. The agency said the payout should boost commerce, services and debt repayment across the country. The deadline to file the 2025 return is May 30, so filing before the batch cut-off matters for an earlier refund. Priority goes to elderly taxpayers, people with disabilities, teachers and those who used the pre-filled return and opted for PIX. Foreign residents with Brazilian tax residency who filed are included in the same batches.

How did Flamengo vs Palmeiras finish?
