Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily guide for Tuesday, March 17, 2026. The Copom begins its two-day meeting today in Brasília — the first rate decision since the committee signalled the start of monetary easing. Markets responded with cautious optimism yesterday: the Ibovespa rallied 1.25% to close at 179,875 while the dollar fell below R$ 5.24. In Rio, Tuesday means free entry at the Forte de Copacabana and a full day of exhibitions at MAR. The big sports news: Ancelotti’s squad list for the World Cup warm-up friendlies dropped yesterday — and Neymar was left out. Expect partly sunny skies and a high of 28 °C.

This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Latin American financial news coverage for expats and the international community.

Weather & What to Wear
What to wear

Tuesday opens partly sunny at 23 °C, climbing to 28 °C by early afternoon with just 5% chance of rain. Light cloud cover makes this an ideal day for outdoor sightseeing — the Forte de Copacabana terrace will be especially pleasant. Wednesday stays similar, but by Friday a weather shift brings 60% rain probability and cooler temperatures. Dress light today: breathable fabrics, sunglasses, and SPF 30+. Keep a light jacket handy for air-conditioned museums.

What to See & Do
What to see & do

Today’s Highlight

Forte de Copacabana — Free Entry Tuesday

One of Rio’s best-kept secrets for visitors: the Forte de Copacabana offers free entry every Tuesday. The military history museum, set inside the imposing coastal fortification, includes a panoramic terrace with sweeping views of Copacabana, Ipanema, and the Arpoador headland. The on-site Confeitaria Colombo café is a bonus. Praça Coronel Eugênio Franco, 1 — Copacabana.

Museums

Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) — Praça Mauá

The Bienal de São Paulo itinerance exhibition continues at MAR. Open Tuesday through Monday (closed Wednesdays), 11h–18h, last entry 17h. The rooftop terrace is one of the best vantage points over the revitalized port zone. Praça Mauá, 5.

MAM Rio — Parque do Flamengo

Three major exhibitions are now on view: a century-spanning collection show of Brazilian art, the Carmen Portinho retrospective, and the first Brazilian edition of Daniel Buren’s installation project. Open daily except Tuesdays — note that MAM is open today (Tuesday is normally closed, but verify current schedule). Av. Infante Dom Henrique, 85.

Museu Histórico da Cidade — Gávea

A group exhibition inspired by Paulo Leminski featuring 34 artists opened at the start of March. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9h–16h. Estrada Santa Marinha, s/n — Gávea.

Galleries

Anita Schwartz Galeria — Gávea

New solo show of large-format paintings. Mon–Fri 10h–19h, Sat 12h–18h. Free. Rua José Roberto Macedo Soares, 30.

Nara Roesler — Ipanema

A curated group show of gallery-represented artists continues. Mon–Fri 10h–18h, Sat 11h–15h. Rua Redentor, 241.

Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim — Ipanema

Contemporary painting exhibition on the Ipanema waterfront. Tue–Sun 13h–19h. Av. Vieira Souto, 176.

04
Getting Around
How to move

MetrôRio runs Monday to Saturday 5h–midnight. Line 1 (orange) connects General Osório (Ipanema) to Uruguai. Line 4 links Barra da Tijuca to General Osório via Jardim Oceânico. For the Forte de Copacabana, exit at Cardeal Arcoverde and walk south along the waterfront (~15 min).

Where to Eat
Where to eat

After the Forte (Copacabana): The Confeitaria Colombo outpost inside the Forte serves classic pastries and café, but for a fuller meal, walk to the Copacabana beachfront strip along Av. Atlântica. Restaurants on the side streets between Rua Siqueira Campos and Rua Santa Clara offer solid comida a quilo lunch options.

Near MAR (Centro/Saúde): The Praça Mauá area has expanded its food offerings with the port revitalisation. Try the small restaurants along Rua Sacadura Cabral for contemporary takes on traditional carioca cuisine.

Gávea/Jardim Botânico (gallery district): If you are visiting Anita Schwartz or the Museu Histórico, the streets around Rua Pacheco Leão and Rua Jardim Botânico have excellent lunch spots — from casual bistros to upscale Brazilian fare.

The session read
The Ibovespa rose 0.51%, with breadth positive — 8 of 14 names higher. Utilities led, while Consumer Disc. lagged.

The big talking point in every botequim this morning: Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-player squad list for Brazil’s World Cup warm-up friendlies against France (March 26) and Croatia. The headline surprise is Neymar’s exclusion. The Santos star had publicly expressed his desire to be included, but Ancelotti opted for a younger attacking core featuring Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Endrick, and Matheus Cunha. Rio is well represented with several Flamengo players — Alex Sandro, Danilo, and Léo Pereira all made the cut.

The Brasileirão Round 6 concluded last night with Chapecoense 1–1 Grêmio, leaving the early-season picture tight: several teams are bunched on similar points totals through the first six matches.

Expat language exchanges continue at various Botafogo and Leblon cafés — check community boards at coworking spaces for this week’s schedule.

Game Day
Game day

Brasileirão Série A — Round 6 complete. No fixtures today. The seventh round begins Thursday, March 19.

Last night’s closer: Chapecoense 1–1 Grêmio (Arena Condá). Walter Clar converted a penalty for the hosts before Nardoni equalised for Grêmio in first-half stoppage time after a goalkeeping error.

Round 7 (Rio clubs): Fixtures and times to be confirmed — check the CBF schedule for Flamengo and Fluminense matchday details later this week.

Seleção Brasileira: Ancelotti announced his 26-player squad yesterday for friendlies against France (Mar 26) and Croatia, both in the US. Neymar was not included. Flamengo’s Alex Sandro, Danilo, and Léo Pereira were selected, alongside Rio-connected players Casemiro (Manchester United) and Vinícius Júnior (Real Madrid).

Business & Markets
Market watch

Monday close (Mar 16): The Ibovespa rallied 1.25% to close at 179,875 points, snapping a three-session losing streak. The rebound was driven by improved global risk appetite after signs of a partial de-escalation in the Middle East — Iran’s foreign minister indicated the Strait of Hormuz remained open to non-hostile vessels, and two LPG tankers transited the strait bound for India. The USD/BRL fell 1.62% to close at R$ 5.23.

Copom — Day 1 today: The committee begins its two-day meeting this morning. The Selic stands at 15.00%. After yesterday’s session, the DI curve is pricing in a 0.25 pp cut as the base case, with a 0.50 pp reduction now essentially off the table and a minority of market participants pricing in a hold. The decision is announced Wednesday evening.

Focus Report (Mar 16): The weekly survey brought notable shifts — IPCA inflation jumped to 4.10% (from 3.91%), the biggest single-week increase in recent editions. Selic year-end rose to 12.25% (from 12.13%). GDP was nudged up to 1.83%. The USD/BRL year-end projection eased to R$ 5.40 (from R$ 5.41), its fourth consecutive decline.

Super Wednesday: Beyond the Copom, the Federal Reserve also announces its rate decision on Wednesday. The Fed is expected to hold at 3.50%–3.75%. The Bank of England and Bank of Japan also meet this week.

Oil: Brent crude opened today around $103.50 per barrel, still elevated but off last week’s highs near $120. The partial reopening of Hormuz shipping lanes eased the most extreme supply-disruption fears, though the situation remains fluid.
