Rede D’Or, Brazil’s largest private hospital network. Posted a higher second-quarter profit as busier operating rooms and a growing insurance business carried the quarter.

Adjusted net income rose 8.5% to R$1.29 billion, about US$239 million. Even as the cost of caring for more patients climbed alongside the extra activity.

What Rede D’Or reported

For the second quarter of 2026, the company reported adjusted net income of R$1.29 billion, roughly US$239 million. That was up 8.5% from the same quarter a year earlier, the figure most of the market focused on.

Net revenue rose 5.6% to R$14.910 billion, about US$2.89 billion, so the top line grew steadily rather than dramatically.

Reading the profit line

There are two profit numbers here, and it helps to know which is which. The reported bottom line came in at R$1.289 billion, up 23.1% year-on-year under IFRS 17, or R$1.239 billion and up 9.7% excluding it.

The adjusted figure of R$1.29 billion strips out reserve movements to show the amount the company can actually distribute to shareholders.

Busier operating rooms

The engine of the quarter was simple: the hospitals did more work. Rede D’Or carried out 151,000 procedures, up 10.6% from a year earlier, with oncology a notable area of expansion.

That extra volume lifted hospital-services revenue by 9.8%, the largest single driver of the group’s growth.

The insurance arm pulls its weight

The other half of the story is SulAmerica, the insurer the group bought in 2022 and folded into its model. Its revenue grew 6.9% in the quarter, and it now serves 6.1 million beneficiaries, up 9.7% year-on-year.

Health-plan lives reached about 3.2 million, up 4.5%, with 136,000 net additions in the three months alone.

Why owning the insurer matters

Owning both the hospitals and the insurance plan lets Rede D’Or keep patients inside its own network. When a member needs surgery, the treatment and the bill can flow through the same company.

Analysts at Citi flagged an improving loss ratio at SulAmerica as one of the things holding up the quarter.

Where the costs came from

More activity is good for revenue, but it is not free, and costs rose to match. Management pointed to higher medical fees tied to the extra surgical volume, plus a bigger bill for materials and medicines.

That is why revenue climbed faster than profit, and why the adjusted gain landed at a measured 8.5%.

A network built on scale

Rede D’Or is the largest private hospital operator in Brazil, and its size is the point. By the end of the quarter it ran 76 hospitals, with 10,351 operational beds out of 13,555 total.

That footprint gives it buying power with suppliers and a wide net to channel insured patients through.

The core profitability picture

Beyond the headline profit, adjusted EBITDA is a cleaner read on how the operation itself is doing. It came in at about R$2.9 billion, roughly US$537 million, for the quarter.

The consolidated EBITDA margin rose 2.1 percentage points to 19.5%, showing the business improved its profitability despite the cost pressure.

What the quarter says about demand

Rising procedures and a growing insured base both point to steady, resilient demand for private healthcare. Brazilians who can afford private cover tend to hold onto it, which gives the group a dependable stream of patients.

Oncology and other complex treatments, where Rede D’Or has invested, also tend to command higher revenue per case.

How investors read the results

The numbers describe a company growing on both fronts, hospitals and insurance, at the same time. The debate for investors is whether rising medical costs will keep nibbling at the gap between revenue and profit.

For now, the mix of higher volumes and a firmer insurance arm kept the quarter comfortably in the black.

What to watch next

The key things to follow are surgical volumes, the SulAmerica loss ratio, and the cost of materials and medicines. If the insurer keeps improving while hospitals stay busy, the two sides can reinforce each other.

The risk is that faster-rising costs squeeze margins, so the gap between revenue growth and profit growth is worth watching.
