Nearly Half of Brazilian Exports Avoid U.S. Tariff Hike—but Key Goods Face Pain

Almost 43.4% of Brazil’s exports to the United States—worth $18.4 billion out of $42.3 billion this year—will not be hit by a new 50% import tax, according to official figures from the American Chamber of Commerce for Brazil.

After the U.S. announced this sharp tariff increase in response to political friction with Brazil’s government, it also published a list of 694 products that are exempt.

Major items on this safe list include oil, fuels, iron ore, fertilizers, orange juice, wood pulp, and civil aircraft, all essential for both economies. These exceptions matter.

Fuel exports alone, totaling $8.5 billion, now make up the largest share of tariff-free trade, while $2 billion worth of Brazilian aircraft still reach American markets.

Iron and steel ($1.8 billion) and wood pulp ($1.7 billion) are also spared, helping to protect many jobs and businesses on both sides. However, many important goods did not escape.

Brazilian coffee and beef, both top earners, now face the full 50% tariff. As a result, some exporters have stopped shipments to the U.S., and losses are piling up.

Machinery exports already dropped nearly 24%, wood products are down 14%, and many fruit and auto parts producers report financial strain. American buyers will also feel the pinch.

Thousands of small and medium-sized U.S. businesses rely on Brazilian imports. Sharp tariff hikes may drive up costs for everything from packaged foods and juices to cars and construction materials.
