Mexico’s Senate Approves Call for Judicial Branch Elections in 2025

The Senate of Mexico has approved a call for elections to fill positions in the Federal Judiciary. The vote, which took place on Tuesday, resulted in 78 senators supporting the measure and 39 opposing it. This decision sets in motion a process to renew key roles within the country’s judicial system.

The approved document outlines a timeline for the election process. It requires the Union Powers to form and install evaluation committees by October 31, 2024. These committees will invite citizens to participate in the election of new Supreme Court Justices.

The extraordinary election process for the Federal Judiciary, scheduled for 2024-2025, will determine several important positions. These include nine Supreme Court Justices, five magistrates for the Judicial Discipline Tribunal, and two magistrates for the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal.

Additionally, the election will fill 15 magistrate positions for the Regional Chambers of the Electoral Tribunal. A total of 464 magistrate positions for collegiate circuit courts and collegiate courts of appeal will also be up for election.

The process will also determine 386 district judge positions. These positions will be distributed across various judicial circuits in the country, taking into account the specific competencies required for each role.

The National Electoral Institute (INE) has been granted authority to issue necessary agreements. These will cover the organization, development, vote reception, counting, monitoring, and auditing of the elections.

Current judges in office will automatically be included in the candidate lists sent by the Senate to the INE. However, they have the option to decline their candidacy if they choose to do so.
