The presidents of Brazil and France, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Emmanuel Macron, talked for an hour on the phone on Thursday (Jan. 26). Both aligned to more left-wing oriented policies in world politics.

They talked about what they consider “risks hanging over democracy” regarding the violent actions of Brazilian Spring protesters.

Still, on political strategies, they talked about the problems generated by fake news.

On Brazil-France relations, Lula invited Macron to visit Brazil and visit the shipyard in Itaguaí (RJ).

Environment – The presidents talked about efforts to combat the significant threat of climate change.

President Lula explained to the French President the objectives of the Summit of the Amazon Countries that he will organize in the coming months.

He commented, by the way, the importance of having the presence of France, the only European country to share this biome, through French Guyana.

President Macron reiterated the invitation for Brazil to participate in the “One Forest Summit” that France and Gabon will host in Libreville in early March.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND COMBATING HUNGER

When dealing with global governance issues, they agreed on the importance of readjusting the international financial architecture as an instrument for financing the climate transition and fighting hunger and inequality.

It was reminded that India and Brazil, which hold the G-20 presidency this year and next year, will play a central role in this debate.

MERCOSUR + EUROPEAN UNION

President Lula indicated that he has been treating with the other MERCOSUR partners the need to conclude the negotiations of the ‘MERCOSUR-European Union agreement, a topic discussed with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, at a recent meeting in Buenos Aires.

PEACE POLICY

The urgency to seek peace between Russia and Ukraine deserved a broad exchange of opinions between the two presidents.

President Lula stressed the need for greater engagement of global leaders with this objective within the UN and a “political G20.

Through social networks, Macron commented on the phone call to Lula:
“I reiterated to President @LulaOficial the support of France after the attacks in Brasilia.”

“We reaffirm our determination to act in favor of the climate, biodiversity, our forests and against hunger. We will overcome these challenges.”
