For 33% of Brazilians, government should ease gun purchases -poll

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A PoderData poll, conducted April 24-26, 2022, shows that 33% of the Brazilian population favors the federal government facilitating the acquisition of firearms. However, the majority (62%) oppose the measure. Another 5% did not respond.

Making the sale, carrying, and possession of guns more flexible was one of President Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) campaign mottos. Currently, there are more than 1 million legalized guns in Brazil.

The survey was conducted by PoderData, a company of the Poder360 Jornalismo group, using its resources. The data was collected between April 24 and 26, 2022, through calls to cell phones and landlines. 3,000 interviews were conducted in 283 cities in the 27 states of the Federation. The margin of error is two percentage points. The confidence interval is 95%.

PoderData also stratified responses by gender, age, region, education, and family income. Here are the highlights:

• Gender – the percentage in favor of gun relief is higher for men (45%); it drops to 22% for women;
• Age – the disapproval rate is higher among young people ages 16-24: 74%;
• Region – Midwestern residents are the most likely not to complicate (47%);
• Family income – those receiving five minimum wages are most favorable: 42%.

BOLSONARISTAS MOST FAVORABLE

Among respondents who think the president’s job is “good” or “great,” 69% favored making it easier for the government to acquire firearms. Among the group that rates Bolsonaro as “bad” or “terrible,” the percentage drops to 14%.
