European Tourists Flock to Central America

Data from the Central American Tourism Integration Secretariat SICA shows a rise in European visitors to Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Spain leads in bookings, followed by Germany and France. In 2022, these countries welcomed 21.2 million visitors. Compared to the previous year, this is a significant jump.

By 2023, tourist numbers not only returned to pre-pandemic levels but also exceeded them.

For instance, El Salvador saw a 27% increase in visitors by September 2023. Honduras also reported more tourists in the first quarter of 2023.

Panama and Belize followed suit with their own impressive gains. Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic set new tourist records too.

These places attract visitors with their rich heritage. They offer 20 UNESCO World Heritage Sites that range from ancient ruins to colonial cities.

Additionally, they focus on sustainable tourism options. This helps to explain the region’s tourism recovery, which now surpasses 2019 visitor numbers.

Background

This surge in tourism is noteworthy for several reasons. First, it’s a positive sign for economies heavily reliant on tourism revenue.

Second, the quick recovery highlights the region’s global appeal.

Historically, Central America and the Dominican Republic have been attractive for their natural and cultural diversity.

Places like El Salvador and Belize have long worked to balance tourism with sustainability. The rise in visitors also implies that these efforts are paying off.

Finally, as tourism grows, the challenge will be to manage this influx responsibly. How these nations adapt will shape the sector’s long-term health.
