EU Plans to Boost Maritime Security Ties with Cabo Verde

The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, expressed a need to strengthen the relationship with Cape Verde.

This idea emerged after he met with Ulisses Correia e Silva, Cape Verde’s Prime Minister. Both leaders discussed enhancing maritime security.

Josep Borrell shared these plans on social media, emphasizing the 15-year-long partnership between the EU and Cape Verde.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Silva is in Brussels for the Global Gateway Forum. The event spans multiple days and focuses on international cooperation.

Earlier this week, the EU committed to a 246-million-euro investment package for Cape Verde.

This funding aims to advance green energy, sustainable transport, and digital progress. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, also spoke on this matter.

She views the Global Gateway Strategy as a pathway to a better future for partner nations, including Cape Verde.

In her words, Cape Verde aligns with the EU’s vision for a world that is greener and more interconnected.

Out of the total investment, 22 million euros are designated for wind energy in Cape Verde. This focus on green energy aligns with broader global trends to combat climate change.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Silva has a meeting with Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of NATO. This meeting will take place in Brussels at NATO headquarters.

Background

The EU and Cape Verde have been partners for 15 years. Their relationship spans multiple sectors, including security, energy, and trade.

Maritime security has been a focal point, especially given Cape Verde’s strategic location in the Atlantic Ocean.

In recent years, Cape Verde has actively sought international partnerships to bolster its economy and infrastructure.

This latest move by the EU complements Cape Verde’s efforts, promising a future that is more secure and sustainable for both parties.
