Environmental Minister Ousted in Guatemala for Misuse of Resources

Yesterday, President Bernardo Arévalo of Guatemala made a decisive move for integrity by dismissing María José Iturbide, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources.

Iturbide, a biologist and environmentalist with a Ph.D. from Lincoln University in New Zealand, started her term in January 2024. Her prior work included water conservation and wildlife protection.

Her dismissal followed reports from Vox Popoli about her daughter’s unauthorized use of official ministry vehicles and state security for personal matters.

Iturbide acknowledged the misuse but cited personal threats as justification. Initially, Arévalo addressed the error with Iturbide.

However, Vice President Karin Herrera’s veiled criticism led to Iturbide’s removal.

Arévalo’s cabinet, known for its gender parity, features professionals from diverse sectors committed to public service.

The reactivation of the Cerro Blanco mine by the previous administration has sparked widespread debate.

Environmental groups and local communities have raised concerns about its potential long-term environmental impacts.

This situation highlights the challenges of implementing anti-corruption measures while also considering governance and environmental responsibility.

It represents a pivotal point in Arévalo’s administration, emphasizing the need for public accountability in Guatemala.
