Thirteen parties have registered to run. Voter registration will end on October 6.

In total, 6,202,780 people can vote, including 685,026 abroad.

The court’s head urges respect, tolerance, and no violence. She assures that the court is committed to a transparent election.

Context

The call for elections follows a long history of democratic processes in El Salvador. Voting has been a cornerstone of Salvadoran society since the 1980s.

The country has seen a shift in political power over the years. Various parties have led the government, showing a dynamic political landscape.

El Salvador has made strides to include overseas voters. The move to online voting aims to boost participation.

Past elections had limitations for those abroad, which this election aims to overcome.

Bukele

In 2021, the president, Nayib Bukele, gained more influence. His party, Nuevas Ideas, won a majority in the legislature.

This win led to significant changes in political structure. The reduction in legislative and city seats is one of these changes.

The voter base in El Salvador has been growing steadily. In the 2019 elections, about 5.4 million people were registered.

The rise to over 6 million for 2024 indicates increased political engagement.

The Election Court’s emphasis on fairness has roots in past challenges. Previous elections have faced scrutiny for transparency issues.

The court aims to overcome past shortcomings for a reliable 2024 vote.

This upcoming election is not just a domestic event. It holds significance for El Salvador’s standing in Central America.

A smooth election process will contribute to regional stability.
